EVGA gtx 470: superclocked or regular?

hi all,

I'm planning to get one next week, but I don't know
which would be better, superclocked or regular.

I don't game; I'm going to be using it as a GPU renderer.

Would I be better off to get a non-overclocked card, since
when there is a render going, the thing will have to be going solid
for many hours?

I would say the vanilla/regular version. No need spending the extra dollars on higher clocks when you can overclock the card yourself to achieve the same.

I'm not sure if rendering for hours on end needs higher clocks; probably would cycle between 2D and 3D clocks. Mine do that quite frequently.

why not buy a card that is made for rendering?

its only a question as i dont know what the 470 can do vs a quadro card

I can't afford a quadro card, and most people that use Octane render
do just fine with a gtx 470 or 480.

oh okay, but the quadros is in different priceranges ;)

but if the 470 is perfect then just go with that, then you CAN use it for some gaming if you decide to one day ;) + they're easier to resell one day

if the factory oc'ed cards are around the same price then i would go with that, most pre'oc'ed have a better oc potential imo

regular, OC it yourself, youd end up at the same clocks anyways. GF100 tends to OC well regardless.

I have to disagree here, My SC cards clock better than does my vanilla. It may be only about 50mhz on the core and 100mhz+ on the ram, but to say they clock the same just isnt exactly true.

The SC gets a voltage bump out of the box, not that some time in any OC app couldnt change that, but I still feel the SC is a better quality part than my vanilla is.

well, What I was wondering was whether I should overclock it at all,
considering what I want to use it for.

I run SLi, and I have no need to OC....on the flip side, I can see visual pretties when I OC them.

nvidia also just released the quadros for the fermi architecture which means quite quickly we'll be seeing bios mods for the regular fermi's to run as quadros.

I have heard the superclocked models are better at overclocking then the regular ones.

But really, if you're not going to be pushing the cards to much(if at all), i say just pick up the regular 470 and overclock it using precision.

Does anyone know if clocks really matter for rendering?

they matter but not as much as architecture. really the fact that it has 448 cores is going to be what really matters
