Help me pick out some DDR3

I recently bought a MSI P55-GD80. Now I'm looking at ram. It supports DDR3 1066/1333 (OC-1600-1800-2000-2133). I hear Ripjaws are pretty sweet. I've been trying to understand timings to better myself but no luck. I'm currently looking at these: G.SKILL Ripjaws 1333 I plan to get one set at first and a second a lil later. I like the option to overclock when I get around to it. As far as a cpu. I'm pretty decided on the i7 875k.

Will those sticks be good or what else should I look at(I'm open to suggestions)? This is mainly for gaming and folding/crunching when I'm not.

I was gonna say the Ripjaws haha! But for very little cash extra you can get the 1600 stock speed ones.

An easy way to understand timings is that the lower the number the better (7-7-7 is faster than 8-8-8). I was trying to decide on some DDR3 not too long ago and went with some G.Skill Tridents because I want some extra flexibility with future overclocks. The Ripjaws looked really tempting though and I was strongly considering them along with PIs.

I did have those (the black ones) in my compare on the egg. I don't want to go to high on speed cause I'd like room to oc and dc if needed. I prob will get those at that price. Would those 1600 black ones oc to 2000 or better or just go with 2000? I don't wana burn out my dimms.

I would lean to 2K speeds if it was me.

things to consider....my 860 plays best with a 10X and 12X ram multi. So if you were to buy 1333 or 1600 speeds it will limit the bclk speeds. On the flip side, I have been lucky with my choices and can run the Tridents at 2000mhz cas7 with a bit of extra voltage. I know I am running a different board, but I wasnt happy with my Ripjaws

the mushkin blacklines use D9KPT's or lower end PSC chips, the ripjaw 1600 with cas lower than 8 use elpidia BBSE or BASE either way the ripjaw 1600's are the best and good for 2000mhz or better, the blacklines if you get KPT's will struggle anything over 1900 if you are lucky to get the PSC's they will do 2K. but as peet sai I would get the sticks rated for 2000mhz at cas 8 or 9 they will do 2200 or better. also I can say the trident 2133mhz sticks are great sticks and rock BBSE's, the mushkin redlines 6-8-6-24 1600mhz ram will do 2100mhz no sweat. things to ponder over

I think I decided on the G. Skill Tridents DDR3 2000 Model F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD They sound and look good.

Unless I really should go with something else. I did look up those Mushkin blacklines but couldn't find cas 8/9. They only have 7/10.

There's nothing else offhand that you really should go with. The main consideration is price. CAS 7 DDR3 2000 is pretty sweet though (i.e. the Mushkins). Only $15 more than those Tridents which are CAS 9.

but my tridents that are the same as those run 2000mhz CAS7 and will hit 2400mhz for 24/7 use

Well there you go. Though why market them at CAS 9 then?

I dont really know why they marketed them so high. But running CAS7 only took a slight bump to the QPI/VTT to make it stable. 2400mhz took some Dram voltage to accomplish, but it ran like that for 3-4 months with no issues at all.

I think 2000 will be fast enough for me at first. It'll be a jump for me anyways coming from ddr2 800. The board goes to 2133 and those tridents are just below that so that should be fine at first. I may see bout oc'ing them but time will tell.

what volts u at on them at 2400? Seeing my mobo says 2133. Is it possible to go beyond that?

I needed 1.74V for 2400 stable as a rock (9-10-9-27). 2133 is just the label on the board, of course you can go faster.

Also an important part is that the 875K will allow you to run the ram with a 12X multi. So essentially with a 200bclk you can achieve 2400mhz on the ram really quickly

Sounds good to me. 1.74 isn't that far from stk 1.65. anything over 2000 and stable is sweet.

Looks like I'll look on here for them before getting from the egg.

I had mine actually running 2600mhz (10-11-11-31) with 1.84V. Just at that point the timings made it irrelevant to run them there over the 2400 CAS9.

And that's pretty hard on the IMC, no?

with 1600mhz i can post 4.2ghz, but it isn't stable. with 2400 it tops the CPU out at 4.1 stable (Wont post more unless its really cold). It takes more QPI/VTT than more people are accustomed to running, but this UD7 and her UD6 take it all day long with no ill effects.
