Story:
Shipped my water cooled computer from home to my dorm and due to the weight of all the water cooling parts, the motherboard broke. Because I have to ship it often, I need to switch to aircooling.

Problem:
My graphics card, the radeon HD 4870x2 had a waterblock installed and I no longer have the stock heatsink.

Question:
What VGA cooler is compatible with the HD 4870x2 and will give the best performance (and I understand it's only air cooling). Do coolers built for the 5970 (also a dual gpu card) work with the older 4870x2?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Here is one, though I do not know the reputation of the seller. Accelero Xtreme

Or you could try for this one Ebay

Best one there was. If you can find one, been dis-continued.

You might have to check the B\S\T forum here on TPU, ebay or something to find one.
Or, look for a cheap buy on a dead card and use the cooler off it.

Goodluck.:)

EDIT:

Dam*, don't go fill the coffee cup, you miss a lot.

You could prob get two orb coolers to fit. Sumthin like this vf2000 look small enough to get two side buy side.

I'd rather not use two coolers, I prefer to have one single piece cooler that covers both gpus :/

Well obveusly you'd prefer a single hd4870x2 cooler but with them things being as rare as hens teeth two orb type HD4870 coolers might be your only option.

Two coolers are gonnah cost you around $140, why not just get a 5770 and have DX10 and 11 capability?

the 4870 has 10 and 10.1 capability and It is my understand it is more powerful than the 5770. Besides, DX10 is barely used, I have a lot of time to consider DX11 lol

I think if you compare the benchmark results the 5770 kicks it's arse. (Note thats 1 V 1 no idea if 2x 4870 beat 1 5770)

Ps didn't realize the 4870 had DX10.

The 4870x2 is actually quite fast, even for a previous generation card. I'd bet money its faster than one 5770.

It doesn't even come close to a HD4870X2, which is what this thread is about.

My points was simply that it seems a waste spending all that money on coolers for an outdated graphics card, when he could get a new one for around the same money, with only a small, most likely unnoticeable drop in performance.

I'd have to argue the point that my card is outdated. Even today, DX9 is used primary for coding games, with a few DX10 and even fewer 10.1 here or there. Even still, those DX10 games are barely better than their DX9 equivalent. DX11 won't be mainstreams for much longer than It will take for me to get a new card. However, this thread is not about buying a new card, I'm asking for a cooler for a specific reason that a new card is not an option.

You can get a HD4870X2's performance for around 60-70$ ? Nope, you can't really get close.

To the OP: The Accelero 4870X2 is available here (In Israel, at this link, just click on one of the icons to see the product). It costs 150NIS, which translates to slightly over 39$. Shipping it over to the USA will be around 25$ for air mail, and around 15$ for regular mail. It is sold in a store across the street from where I work, so I can help you out if you cannot find a cheaper option for getting it. I won't ask for any money, just the shipping and cost of the Accelero itself.

Hit me up with a PM if you're interested.

(Disclaimer: No, I am not affiliated with that store in any way, shape, or form).
