GTX 285, able to flash to GTX 280? If so, how?

Yer, but he said the 285 wasn't behaving at its full clocks and that 280s can't be converted to 285s.

As you can see in the GPU-Z shots, one shows the 65nm/576mm squard GPU and the other shows the 55nm/487mm squared GPU.

You're lucky cross-flashing didn't brick the card. I'm sure you lost idle/load voltage ramping as the bios of a 280 won't be able to control VRMs of a 285.

What did I have to lose? The 285 wasn't working correctly, even when down clocking. I kept getting that damn nvlddmkm error; plus the fact that BFG has pretty much closed their doors and is no longer doing RMAs.

It's either be stuck with a faulty GTX 285 or try something drastic to fix the problem.

All I know is that both cards run together in SLI and I'm getting use out of a GTX 285 (with a GTX 280 BIOS) that was otherwise a lost cause for the most part.

It was a good learning experience and fun to do. Luckily it all worked out in the end for me.

Whole part of becoming an enthusiast is to grow some balls i say. Anybody willing to learn would have done what you did. When i had dual 280s if i would have thought to flash to 285 i would have tried

I think it's to learn in order to have a clue what you're doing to minimize chance of failure.

Anybody willing to learn would have done what you did.

Or, downloaded a bios editor and flicked some switches. All it would have taken doing it properly would have been editing the bios to lower clocks to equal 280 and maybe change the device ID to that of a 280. Then again, he can still do it.

Lowering clocks and changing ID is the same as flashing the bios to mimick the same settings.

Learning things to have a clue, and actually doing things risky like flashing a card with 2 seperate chips to the same bios is completely different. You dont find most n00bs just rushing out and doing that with a brand new 285.
