Just popped the IHS off of my GTX460 this morning, and wanted to share some photos.
Despite my belief that i would get a bit lower temps, they actually remained the same, 840/2000mhz@1.050V - 76oC, 15min MSI kombustor run.

What i have on it is Accelero S1 rev2 modded to fit the GTX460.
Yes my temps are a bit high, but for the love of god i cant get them lower. Tried all kind of crap... you name it... replacing thermal paste, tried with little paste or more paste, tried reseating and checking the heatsink, lapped the IHS and when nothing of the above worked i decided to scrap the IHS and try direct contact.
Also after i mounted the heatsink onto the core without the IHS i reseated the heatsink like 5 times a every time same temps (or worse when i tried a bit more TP)...
So i guess my card is a bit on the crap side...

Gainward GTX460 Golden Sample 1GB:

In regards to the IHS and its removal... What i did is taped some duct tape all around the IHS and even put some soft pads on the areas where i thought my knife would exert pressure on the PCB. Shove the knife at the corner, some 2-3mm deep and slowly applied pressure and the IHS just popped...

Oh and, IHS borders are 5mm thick, if u cut more than 5mm u risk cutting/damaging some of the little transistors surrounding the core itself!

Some photos in attachment.

Those temp's seem fine to me...

Even if they are a little on the higher side to what you would like, those temp's are really nothing to worry about :)

You could always mod some aftermarket cooler to help push your temp's down ;)

The problem is, that i AM using an aftermarket cooler. Accelero S1 rev2... my temps with the stock HSF were 72oC+ at 700/1800@1.050V (1.050V is the default volts on my chip)...

Personally I think you've got a nice overclock there, fair enough you haven't pushed the volts up at all, but you've cranked the core up to a nice clock. however it does seem like you have a hot card and there isn't much you can do about it what you haven't already done. I had the same problem on my 6400+ cpu ... just one of those thing's you'e got live with.

Your temps are quite fine for a GTX 460, though you'd expect a little help from an aftermarket cooler. Mine loads @ ~65c 800/2000 1.025v and around 74c 850/2000 1.037v (max volt).

@W1zzard
I dont have any calipers but i've gotten into it a bit and found out that the die size is 24,7 x 14,9mm

@Tech2
I had it running at 870/2200mhz@1.087V but i had to crank the fan up to 2300rpm (Silverstone FM121B 110CFM@2300rpm)... On a 24/7 basis im happy with 840/2000@1.050V but im really keen on finding out what it can do with 1.15V or such... Im currently working on flashing a custom BIOS which will unlock the voltage cap to 1.212V. I'll report how that goes...

You want lower temps, lower the voltage :) Doesn't matter if 1.05V is stock, it will gladly run with less. Not with the max OC, but stock (although that card stock was 800MHz?).

Anyhow, nice IHS pop :)

Yeah, default was 700/1900mhz... But i cant lower the voltage under 1.050V nor can i cgo over 1.087V. The same thing crossed my mind, but i was unable to lower the volts. Thats why im gonna get a modded BIOS so i can go under 1.050V and over 1.087V. As soon as i get it flashed and tested ill post some results...

Nice. And thanks for taking the time to share the photos.

Question to all: what is the coldest and quietest GTX460 on the market? I dont care for getting an extra 10% OC performance, I'd even give up 10% if I could run it cool and silent(ish).

MSI GTX460 Cyclone in my opinion, and id suggest getting 1gb version, its a bit better than 768mb one, and will last longer :)

Yep, i first modded Accelero so it can fit on the GTX460 and after i wasnt satisfied with the temps i decided to pop the IHS...
The cooler is mounted directly to the core, which when you think of it is not that odd since ATI doesnt use IHS on their GPU's and every cooler is mounted directly onto the GPU core.

I dont have any photos of the modded heatsink alone but you can read all about modding it HERE, the "guide" there is for a Radeon HD5770 but the modding steps are exactly the same since the HD5770 also has its core moved closer to the rear of the card.

Its also worth noting that so far only Palit/Gainward GTX460's support aftermarket coolers. The fact is that that only Palit/Gainward have the sae mounting holes as G92/HD48xx GPU's (53mm per side square), and only those cards support coolers that are on the market now (i guess more coolers will be out soon). Actually none of the coolers on the market officially support GTX460 mounting but because of the hole placement on Palit/Gainward cards it is doable to mount 8800GT/HD48xx coolers on the forementioned cards.

Here's a photo of how it looked when i modded mine:

its not a great job at cuttin the aluminum fins, but hey i was anxious and couldnt w8 to try it out... and afterall i did cut them with the regular scissors whithout taking them off :)... Oh and the photos are from before i took off the IHS.

Here's one with 870/2150@1.087V after a run through 3D mark 06:

And one of Vantage 850/2100@1.087V:

I think that the fan was at 2300rpm for Mark06, and at 1600rpm for Vantage!

Gigabyte is quieter (it's silent). Coolest depends on the stock voltage you end up with the card. Mine never goes over 65C and this has 1.012v stock :)

But MSI is good too and you can always tweak the fan if it's too much.

Idd... i've come to a conclusion that all Week 10 cards (manufactured in week 10 of this year) overall have higher temperatures and less overclockability. Although only my card and the card guys at xbit labs were manufactured in Week 10 (that i know of)... They too had problems overclocking the card, and had higher temps - exactly as mine 72oC out of the box stability testing.

My card ahs a default voltage of 1.050V... i doubt anyone out there had bad luck like i did :D

Wow, that card looks smaller than my 8800GTS...

Thats cuz it is smaller, and by quite a bit... its good 5-6cm shorter than lets say reference HD4850, and i also have at home a broken 8800GTS 320MB... It's smaller than that one too!
