Trying to get past 305 HT Ref

Hi,

I purchased a Athlon X2 5000 - C2 with the hope of unlocking the cores.

I managed to get it posting with 3 cores after turning one off and ACC set to Hybrid - Auto.

As the multiplier is locked at x11 ive had to resort to using the HT Ref.

Now i managed to get it running fine at 305 which equalled approx 3350Mhz but slowly trying to get to 310 it would blue screen at 308.

Now ive found with this chip it does not like anything above 1800mhz Hypertransport so i ran it at X5 equaling about 1500 and same with the NB in an attempt to take them out of the picture, the ram is 1066mhz Kingston but i set so that it was running around 800mhz with 2.2v (default for 1066mhz)

The CPU is running at 1.36v, i did have it at 1.45 for ocing as AOD does not allow me to increase it.

Does this sound like a limit of the MB? I was running the NB core at 1.2v and left the SB core at 1.1v. PCIx bus should be locked at 100mhz.

So far my final result is:
3.3ghz X3 at 1.36v - Max Temp is 50c.
2400mhz NB at 1.4v (would not go past 1800mhz until bumped from 1.3)
1800mhz hypertransport.
400mhz DDR2 running at CAS4 down from 5.
The MB is a Gigabyte 790x UD3P at F7a bios.

Also found something odd with the RAM multiplier, seems that at 300mhz HT i should be able to get the RAM to run at its proper speed of 1066 give or take but it fails to boot so settled for 800mhz with a lower CAS and timings.

Would love to take this chip further but so far ive hit a wall.
Cheers

Does anyone know if upping the NB core (not CPU/NB) or Southbridge volt will help me increase the HT Ref?

Any idea what the default is for something like a phenom II 720? as mine were both at 1.1v.

I will prob try anyway tonight and see how it goes.

I am shocked you got 300 out of it
highest ref clk I have seen is 275

Well i dropped the HyperTransport, NB and Ram back, upped the CPU voltage to 1.45 and the NB chipset to 1.3 and SB to 1.3, got past the limit i came across but at 315 the stress test in AOD would fail, much better than it locking up the system.

I then went to the BIOS and set to 315 and changed the CPU voltage to 1.475 but as i set the NB and SB in AOD i forgot about it and it wouldnt post.

Will try again tonight.

Also came across this

Also on here people have managed to run high ref speeds but apart from the memory speed which it looks like they have had to drop theres no other real data which is a shame.

At this point, I'd suggest adjusting your (other) volts and checking if your NB runs hot at full load (stress test). Also, I suggest OCing manually in the bios. Though, to see your board's max htref, drop the cpu multiplier (and everything else, like ram dividers, HT, NB) to it's lowest, squeeze max htref, and work everything up from there. If it still gets stuck at around 305ish, probably either the board or the cpu can't handle it.

They are all the voltages i can adjust unfortunalty.

Dropping the cpu multi would help, i should have done that really rather than going back to the bios and upping the cpu voltage again.

Only issue i have with changing in the BIOS is if it doesnt post i have to reset the BIOS, but the reason i did set to 315 in the bios was to make sure it wasnt AOD causing issues as i found around 255.

Its running at 300 HT etc from the BIOS at the moment.

My target was 3ghz originally as it replaced a Phenom 8750 x3 running at 3ghz so at 3.3 i should be happy, but im not, always want more but if it means running at near 1.5v i will run at 3.3.

If your board doesn't have a (clear bios) button, then at least try to see how high (htref) you can get on minimum multiplier. But if it won't go higher (and if temps and volts aren't the problem) then it probably is the max on your board and/or your cpu.

Fingers crossed its not.

Need a screw driver to join the two pins to reset the BIOS, didnt even come with a jumper for it.

now that sucks. all boards have jumpers for clear bios (and a good number have a button dedicated for it). Probably the volts you need to adjust to make it go higher are either stuck on auto, or can't be adjusted with your board. I may be wrong though.

It is a pain, even a cheap biostar board i have will effectly reset itself automatically if it fails to POST.

I'll drop all the multis, increase the voltages again and see how it gets on.

Its a shame i cant even try one of the older bios versions as i need to be able to disable a core which is only available in the last two revisions.

Tried again last night, dropped the CPU, NB, HT + Ram multi, raised all the voltages i could, increased the FSB, locked up before 315. Going to stick with 300 as it means the RAM is running at a 800mhz Cas4 and ive hit 3.3ghz, i could raise the HT to 305 if the RAM will allow it but i dont like sitting right next ti the limit.

I have unlocked two 45nm x2 5000(2.2Ghz) to Phenom II x4 FX-5000 and the max stable limit that I have seen across the board is 3.0-3.2ghz, regardless of vcore, nb, or ram. It's just the way the parts are binned.
