I've just seen a Sapphire X1600PRO 256 HDTV AGP at a knock down price. How would it compare to my 16 pipe Sapphire x850pro?

The X850pro is the superior card in most aspects, the only thing that lets it down in that it lacks SM3, but that isn't too important other than in the latest Splinter Cell (the only game that I know of which requires SM3). When you consider that quite soon game developers will probably start moving to DX10 you may as well stick with what you have in my opinoin, the X850 is definately a better card.

But if you like things like HDR with SM3.0 that card is better than the 850PRO. I am running a 800XT right now, but I have to say that things looked nicer in some games with the X1600.

but with the HDR and SM3.0 dont you lose FPS with the x1600?? that is to say your fps with the x850 maybe greater then the x1600 even tho the picture looks nicer on the x1600 the frames are lower....right??

That is right, it doesnt take such a hit with the newer technologies. Thats why the X1600 scores better in 06 than in 05.

it scores better in 06 than the x850 because the x850 can't do all the tests, but if you look at the test they can both do (the sm2.0 one) the x850 dominates

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.html?modelx=33&model1=566&model2=558&chart=226

i used the x800xt because it's clocks of 500/1000 are near the 506/1040 of the x850pro. your x850 pro will be even faster

inother words, don't get the x1600pro. it will be a downgrade in performance, and although you will be able to have hdr and whatnot, what was once playable at 1024x768 with the x850 pro, will be playable at max of 800x600 with hdr and the x1600

my $.02

So the X850 will score higher in 3dmark05 but the X1600 scores higher in 3dmark06, right?

Ok, but as far as 'points' go, what card can be overclocked more 'points'.

this is true, but doesn't mean anything other than the x1600 can run different tests. the x1600 probably won't score that much higher, and the x850 will be faster, a lot faster, in the tests it can complete.

if anyone still thinks the x1600pro is a better choice, you might as well buy it, because they are beyond hope!!!

So the conclusion is that the X850 is a better value than the X1600 ?

In terms of the mem on X1600Pro, overclocking is hopeless.
The Core can usually overclock around 100mhz

So reading between the lines, what I think your saying is (and correct me if I'm wrong because the info is a bit hazy here) that the x1600pro is slightly better. Yes? :wtf:

Seriously though, thanks guys I'll give the x1600pro a body swerve and stick with my trusty X850pro.

Cheers.:toast:

i wish i would have got an x850 when i bought my x1600 because they were in the same price rangeish but in my defence lol it was when the x1*** series first came out (damn thing cost me £90 then and thats from ebuyer who have the best prices imo) i got suckered into the whole sm3.0 + hdr thing. however the x850 doesnt pwn the x1600 yes it does give better frame rates but its not a huge gap in fps ie: going to a x1950 from a x1600 now thats a gap.

imo it does what i want it to and gives me decent framerates on most games with some good features and thats what its all about personal choice ;)
