Radeon 9800 PRO or GeForce 6600 GT for my 2800+?

My old GeForce4 Ti4400 just bit the dust and I need a replacement card for my computer. I'll probably build a whole new computer in 12-18 months but for the time being which would you choose for an Athlon 2800+? I can get retail versions of each card with shipping: Radeon 9800 Pro 128meg for $128 and the GeForce 6600GT 128meg for $158. I'd like to be able to play newer games like Doom3 and Half Life 2, and hopefully this can handle Battlefield 2.

If you were in my boat, which would you choose and why? Hopefully I'll have this ordered today or tomorrow. If you feel there's a better card out there for my money, speak up!

Thanks a million!

I'm an ATI fan, but as far as I know the 6600GT is better value for money I think, although not a huge amount separates the cards. If your planning to build a new PC soon, you don't want to splash out too much, but if you're willing to pay the $158 that's probably the best card you'll get for that money.

12-18 months is a long time, perhaps you could get the, by now, often discussed 6800LE, shouldn't cost much more (only 10 euro price difference here)
It can unlock to up to 16 pipes, you can overclock it and it has a 256bit memory bus, the 6600 has a 128 bit one.

hm a 6600gt is faster then even a 68 le with 16 pipes beacuse of the slow ram
i would go for an 6600gt the ram is oc able very well and i saw people bringing 100 mgh more on core
for me the 98 is dead in this days

I got the XFX 6600GT and a buddy of mine just got the 9800 pro. Although the 9800 pro is a 256 bit interface the 6600GT still womps on it big time. The 6600GT usually scores about 25 to 35 percent higher on benches like 3dmark01,03,05 and aquamark3. As far as the 6800LE is concerned I would look into some clocking numbers and if they are proving to be good overclockers I would seriously think about it. Having 16 pipes and a 256bit interface with clocks close to that of the 6600GT would make it the better of the two. If the clocks that can be gained from it are falling well short of the 6600GT then I would pick up the 6600GT. Either way this card is gonna be obsolete when you build cause chances are your next rig will be sli anyway.
My numbers for the 6600GT are in sig. All air cooled.

IN terms of performance, its pretty difficult for 9800Pro to perform better than a 6600GT. 6600GT beats 9800PRO in almost all tests. But as usual ATI is still the stronger one in terms of image quality. Although the Nvidia 6 series cards have improved quite a lot over its predecessors, but its still not up to the ATI standard. That's one point that people tend to overlook.

End of the day, if you have the money to spare, then go for a 6600GT. If you are on a lower budget, a 9800Pro is still a very decent card to get. :)

Just bought the eVGA 6600GT 128meg from Monarch for $177 - $20 rebate, with free FarCry and Soldier of Fortune.

I do good?
