Since I am selling my i7 920 (C0/C1), what processor should I get.

I am keeping most of the other PC components, so a switch to AMD will not be feasible.

I was thinking about getting a cheaper version of the i7 980x, but when do the cheaper hyper-threaded hexcore processors come out?

If those don't come out soon enough (I can't run my PC without a procesor), I will be forced to buy another 920-like processor, but which one should I get? I am looking for a D0 revision, so I can overclock it without too much voltage.

A while back there were a ton of 940's that Intel pimped out for under $200. That really dropped the used value market price for everything under the 940.

I'd look for a 980x, if your mobo supports it, then you wont have to upgrade for at least another year :D

I would LOVE to purchase the 980x, but, I don't think spending one thousand dollars on a processor is a smart thing for me to do.

I would LOVE to purchase a cheaper version of the 980x. Like, what the 920 was to the 965x, I am looking for a 9xx to the 980x.

Why are you selling the 920 ?

You could get the 950 for 300$ but I doubt it would make much difference.

Well if you can luck out and find one between 250-450$, i would get an Xeon E5640

They are around the speed of the 920 but is 32nm with 12mb L3 cache

Why are you selling the 920 ?

Because, it is a C0/C1 revision. I have always been looking for an excuse to sell it in order to get a D0 revision, and I have one: Someone is willing to buy my 920.

I got tired of having to run 1.4 volts just to have 3.8 GHz stable

I was looking at some hardware benchmarks, and how in the world does a stock i7 875k beat a stock i7 965?

Maybe a 920 D0 or an i7 970? Hex-core w/ a slightly lower price

Thank you all for replying.

Since I am selling the processor tomorrow, I was kind of, sort of, forced into buying a 950. But, that is nothing to complain about.

I think you'll be happy with it :toast:

It should have no issue doing 4-4.2ghz, and it should run cooler since you won't need as much voltage :)
