I could probably have accomplished this in my other thread but felt it more appropriate to start a new one

Anyway which 2 tb for raid 5 ? Going to run 4 of these.

I'm heavily considering the wd20ears since it uses the 4kb sectors giving about 100gb more.
Also thinking of the seagate lp which is 5900rpm.

Things to consider would be them running 24/7 and I need reliable.

Any drive that is RAID certified.

I'm tired of reading Newegg reviews that trash a drive for failing in RAID when the drive isn't certified for it and the person took a shortcut by buying the cheaper drive and now wants to blame anyone but themselves.

Something like this would do the trick:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136579

Seagate also makes an enterprise class drive in that size and price but my experience has been that Seagate drives are noisy.

Depending on what you're going to use this for you could consider NAS...

Even though you have a good point with "raid certified" drives, I didn't want to spend that much per drive.

Upgrade from 1.5tb to 2tb

I would go with the wd20ears... Best bang for your buck i would say. i mean sure they run at 5400 rpm but that just means less heat and power consumption. Just bought one my self actually (As a BACKUP for my other drives) and couldn't be happier with it :)

What are you talking about with Raid Certified ? This must be some marketing "feature" as why would a drive fail in raid because its not "raid certified".
Unless HDD's have brains and can sniff out that there's a RAID controller cheating them.

I have EARS and I must say its slow otherwise its pretty much a HDD.

They do have a feature in the firmware that is called TLER Western Digital Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER)

Yes, WD pretty much killed the ability to use their drives in RAID other than the RE drives by disabling TLER.

I say go with the Seagate LP drives. I've got 4, 2 in a RAID1 array and 2 in a RAID0 array, and couldn't be happier. I just ordered another 2 for a RAID box.

Just ordered 8tb.

$500 :/ sometimes I hate shopping. that's a lot of money for drives. sadly I need more space. I hope I don't regret spending $500 on hard drives.

Server will now have 4 x2tb and 2 x 1.5tb

They say on wiki u can toggle that TLER setting.

When they first disabled it, you could re-enable it by flashing the firmware on the drive, but they quickly permanantly disabled the feature on all but the RE class drive.

Yes, I actually do own them. :)

Yeah, 2 problems. 1 wd, 2 $

anyways they are on their way. :)

I can't see why WD alone can be a problem. And the price is lower than Velociraptor drive. But is bigger with essentially the same speed. And also has all the qualities of the server class RE4. In fact they are the same except that RE4 has one extra feature and extensive testing performed prior to shipping to stores to meet higher quality standards for corporate use.
