4870x2 Fan gone loose...please help (Solved)

Hi guy,
recently i started to have that annoying clicking sound from my graphics card which after a few weeks turned into a a very loud rattling. Upon inspection i found out that the VGA fan had gone loose and was making contact with the housing.
I have searched the internet and know how to take the card apart but i want to know if i do that will i be able to tighten the fan back to its normal position and if yes then how ?
Any suggestion in this issue will be appreciated.
p.s my card is out of warranty so cant do a RMA

That happened to my HD3870x2 ( Same fan ) the steel pin running through the fan had broke away from the plastic spinning part of the centrifugal fan.

Big problem was i had to smash the fan up to get inside the thing. There seemed to be no way of dismantling it. There wasnt even any circlip to remove.

You might be lucky & it not be the same thing. There is 3 screws holding the fan in place it could be these have come lose. But to be honist i doubt they have.

What manufactorer is your HD4870x2 by the way?

Im taking it that it has a centrifugal fan but not all hd4870x2's use these fans

aftermarket solution will save you a lot of trouble and lower temps and noise levels considerably

the vga is made by powercolor...
i haven't considered the after market cooler option..do u guys know any brand and how much will it cost ?

IIRC, Arctic cooling had a cooler for the 4870x2. Arctic cooling coolers are very affordable and very efficient, maintaining low noise. Trouble is I can't seem to find if there are any still available.

wat bout ghetto mod...i have read bout it but is it safe ?
i am concerned that because the generic fan has got a stock speed and the card might overheat and fry

also my 1650XT is making that noise in my friend's PC, it is still kicking after 2 years with the issue

This was my solution a modded intel cpu fan ! worked a treat for that hd3870x2 but i doubt the same mod would blow air hard enough for a hd4870x2

if you see that link or google '4870x2 fan mod', you will understand how ingenious some modders can get

i think the intel fan is not powerful enough for this card, but 2x80mm or 1x120mm/140mm should work a treat

hi again

i took the heatsink off and guess what SCREWS THAT HOLD THE FAN IN PLACE WERE LOOSE AND ABOUT TO COME OFF !!! so i tightened them and applied some Tuniq TR1 thermal cleaner to remove the old paste and them put some TX3 on the GPU.I also used some cooking oil to lube the fan just in case.

Now the whole thing is running cool as a whisper with idle temps at 40 with fan speed at 40.

pplaying bad company 2 before i used to get temps like 90-95 with full fan speed and now even at speed or 60 the temps never go up more than 70....

So thats it....thx for all your help and support.

btw i just saw on the internet that using cookin oil as a lube is bad for the fan..if thats the case how can i undo it ?

i know this sounds weird but wet platinum sexual lubricant has saved many fans of mine since it is a really good quality silicon lubricant. i could see cooking oil gunking up after a while
