Daggerfall is indeed a good 'un. Maybe check out Ahriman's Prophecy too, a nice little effort, as the dev says for those who “enjoy classic RPGs like Final Fantasy 6”. You can grab it here.

If you like classic RPG stuff, then there's also Avernum, although that isn't free. The graphics might not be great, but there's lots of description (bit like a pen & paper RPG) and atmosphere. There's a review of Avernum 6, the latest in the series, here.

+1 To morrowind. It can be had for almost free and it's a true masterpiece. I am playing through it again right now and I have to say that it's 10x more extreme than Oblivion.

You haven't been dungeon crawling until you were a half-mile underground searching for Mehrune's Razor at level 10 on Oblivion. When your sword is so busted up you have to beat brainwashed slaves to death with a broom to survive.

Not to detract from that intense experience LaughingMan but many would have a problem with that statement as they don't even consider Oblivion a "real" RPG.
