After looking around for a new update to my video card, I was stuck on whether to buy a 6800, running around the $200 price range, or a 6600gt, running around $160 price range. So I went to Tom's Hardware, and looked at some results for the two video cards. The 6800 is in AGP, and the 6600gt is in pci-e, but the results should be close to what the AGP card can do as well.

Doom 3 (all test were in "High" setting):
6600gt
6800
1024x768, no AA, 8 AF
86 fps
73.7 fps
1024x768, 4 AA, 8 AF
42 fps
54.5 fps
1600x1200, 4 AA, 8 AF
18.5 fps
25.0 fps

Far Cry (all tests in "Very High" setting):
6600gt
6800
1024x768, no AA, no AF
63.1 fps
59.6 fps
1024x768, 4 AA, 4 AF
39.9 fps
39.8 fps
1600x1200, 4 AA, 4 AF
17.1 fps
16.7 fps

3dMark05:
1024x768 no AA, no AF:
6600gt was reported at around 3000
6800 are known to get around 5000 (right?)
1600x1200, AA, AF,
6600gt couldn't run
6800 probably could (right?)

Interestingly enough, Far Cry results were exactly the same for both cards.
In lower settings, 6600gt gets better results, but when some AA, AF is thrown in, 6800 does better,
this is also the same for 3dMark05.

I couldn't find Half-Life 2 benches, anybody got any?

Tell me what you guys think of the results.

Ya i'd go with the 6800 just because its a newer gpu and has better benchmark scores overall.

6800 has 12 pipes and 256bit memory.
6600gt has 8 pipes and 128 bit memory.
The 6800 can be unlocked to use 16 pipes as well, if you're lucky.

Hmmmm...... does your mobo support SLI? If yes, 6600GT could be a better option. Coz you can always "upgrade" later with a similar 6600GT.... :D

well 2*6600gt will STILL suck if you'll use AA & AF ... on 1024*768 will be cool, but on 1280*1024 will be already behind one 6800gt

so it's still better to spend: 1*400 $ (68OOgt) than 2*200 $ (66OOgt) ... & at the end of the year you will get another 6800gt for 'round 200 $ (if you'll need an extra one)

nevertheless 6600gt isn't for gamers that want to play with AA & AF ON!!!

(& there's a new 7xxx coming soon, so prices should drop - right? :p)

There are a few cases where unlocking 16 pipes isn't a prob, but the prob occurs after unlocking the extra pipes for a prolong period of time. Knew someones 6800 with 16 pipes enabled that caught fire after he overclocked it. No kidding. Seriously on fire and not spark. ;)

Anyway at stock, a 6600GT should perform better than a 6800 due to its higher clockspeed for both core and mem. That's at lower resolution of up to 1024x768 though. Throwing AA and AF will result in a significant performance hit as compared to a 6800. :)

omg the 6800 is faster about some things like 256 bit memory and a better core

without any AA, AF, everything on high, the CS:S benchmark got 80 FPS,
with 16/6 unlocked, i got 100 FPS,
then i decided to turn AF on 16x, and i still got 100 FPS.
tight stuff!
