With the release of the GTX 570, why don't the other older generation prices ever drop accordingly.

You can buy the following today:

GTX 580 $520
GTX 570 $350
GTX 480 $410 /mir

Are people today still buying the 480 for $60 more then the 570?

With recent benchmarks showing GTX570 superiority to the GTX480 why would the pricing not drop on them? Sure the price has come down but why are the last gen cards always so out priced upon replacement by new gen cards... Dates back well beyond these cards..

Just a thought... why? In normal marketing the manufacture would drop pricing to eliminate the stock of the older items. Apparently not the case here.

I'm sure it's up to the retailer at this point as Nvidia is no longer producing GTX 480's.

I've wondered this too. It's quite irritating really, as it prevents one from getting a real bargain.

I can only think that the prices can be kept high, because there's enough clueless punters out there to buy at this inflated price. :wtf:

For example, given that the cheapest GTX 570 is around £280 right now, I'd expect the GTX 480 to be around £220 and not £300. Although, thinking about it, the 480 has "moar memory so it's betta!" <facepalm> Maybe that's why...

Not all situations are like this though, so if anyone has a definitive answer on this one I'd love to hear it.

There is no valid reason. I remember walking through office depot and seeing 3-5 year old cards for near original release pricing. OD is a poor example but an example none the less.

I just had a chat yesterday with a retailer. I was asking them why a gtx 260 was still $200. Said that some chaps will still buy it. I for one, would let it rot on the shelves!

releasing the 5xxx only few month's after the massive release of the fermi is the reason .
they make cards now like they make bread . you have to take it fresh out of the
bakery every morning at 7 am . or you wont find it anymore so its price wont even
drop for antic's collectors , when you have a competitive trying to root you out
of the market card by card like ati things must get messy .
this war may go on for ever or one company will fall back like it happened before .
then the market wont be so turbulent . but then you would still pay 299$ for a gtx260

It's probably so that customers can sell their cards off. Because GTX480 customers won't be happy to see the value of their product just drop down by a $100.

I would assume it's down to profit margins, the cards were bough earlier at a higher price and dropping the price would slash their profit margin, even more so on cards they wont have new stock in as at least when newer stock is bought it could be bought for a lower price thus keeping their profit margin but having an overall cheaper price.

If I bought X cards for $200 a year ago, marked them for $300 resale. Today they are replaced by new gen cards, it makes more sense to sell them at a loss then not sell them at all.
Sold for $180 you lose $20, or you can not sell them at all and lose $200.

But that follows the assumption that just because they are over priced they will not sell, unfortunately there is a lot of people that don't have a clue about these things and would assume as it's expensive its powerful and even more so when a store worker tells them its really powerful and high end or whatever.

Whoever is buying a GTX 480, will only be doing so to give his existing GTX 480 an SLI companion. Hence the price will be the same, and whatever inventory is there will be slowly digested by the market. If anyone picks the GTX 480 over GTX 570 for standalone, well, they're paying that $60 ignorance tax.
