You can scrounge around the interwebs to look for (still) good C2D systems, much better for your money.

lower access times, so yes, faster load times.

also, if your system was to stutter due to HDD related slowdowns, it would recover faster.

To give you an idea any of the video cards you could get for your system pretty much will be slower than the igp in my core i3.

My recommendation

Athlon ii dual core
880g mobo
2x2gb ram
7200rpm hdd

Call it a day

My recommendation:

Athlon II dual core, or C2D
2gb ram, possibly 4 if budget stretches (you don't really need 4, 2 is enough)
cheapest good motherboard (870G is good, but you might want to take a look at the 7xx series, or any p35)
any HDD.

This is the cheapest you can get away with.

I don't mean to frustrate you but people put computers like that on the curb. You should build something respectable. Go for something dual core for cheap. You're worth it. ;)

We are about to turn in some low end core 2 computers, it is still old hardware, but dual cores are a must these days.

Ill see if I can find them and donate it to you.

I also have about a thousand or so 1gb sticks of ram at 667, ill check on those.

One of our sections has about 20 or so QX9650 computers that are about to go also. I am not sure when, but soon. These cant be donated, but maybe we can find a deal sub $200.

old gaming systems are my LIFE!!!
Even a dual core would be to modern for me!
Why buying a new pc, when there is no reason to?
720p youtube/gta san andreas/video chatting/enemy territory/blue ray
My P4 can do all these tasks with no probs and thats more than enough for me!
Im about to max my system out by doing following:
-Upgrading from my P4 2.53GHz 512kb to a P4 2.80GHz 1mb ($15)
-replacing my radeon 9250 128mb with an ATI HD-XXXX ($40)
-extending my ram to 2x1GBDDR Dual channel ($30)
-exchanging my 5400rpm 80gig for a 500gb 7200rpm ($50)
-tuning my ac97 up to a sound blaster live! ($10)
TOTAL: $145
Its gonna be the ultimate semi-gaming system FOR ME!!!

Please don't. You may like old systems now, but build a low-end modern system with easily 4 times the power of that undead creature and you'll never look back.

This scenario sounds similar to our good friend the smallvile fanboy that used to only buy pre-build desktops.

Desktop hardware operates differently to a laptop,if you really want play games like call of duty world at war i would reconmend getting parts like this which is $281:

Say what you want about your old school gaming PC,times has changed now its about time to look at evolution for desktop hardware.

That can't be.
The fact is a dual-core Atom is already faster than a P4.
The clock speed (Mhz) doesn't mean shit, when you are talking about different CPUs.

The Pentium 4 is too slow for any kind of 3D gaming now.
If you were to upgrade from a P4 to another P4, I say save money and don't disappoint yourself.

Well it has a crapy intel graphics so I guess thats why.....

I really dont want to upgrade my board, because its a really good moded MSI MS-6577!
I can overclock extreamly, but I wont do it until I get my 3.06GHz P4 with HT support!
HT is almost like dual core and I ccan still keep my mobo!!! :>

All im looking for, is a ATI HD-XXXX AGP graphics card

sounds like you guys are beating a dead horse here. hoax32 just a heads up a high in agp card will cost double what a faster low end PCI-E card cost. You'll need to get it used from some one. They made a few agp 3850's but they were bottle necked by a P4 processor. I think the highs you can go Nvidia is a 7800gs 256mb. Really good card i had an asrock board with agp 8x and pci-e 4x with a c2d E6400 and that card performed great, but that old p4 can not compare to a c2d.

HyperThreading. Towards the end of the P4's they put out some with HT, most over 3GHz. They were pretty good, I used a 3.2GHz for about 4 years.

I had those old P4s. The highest clocked CPUs ever. And quite hot too lol

Good thing a GeForce 6600 barely warms even under load.

The thing is HT is in no-way comparable to a dual-core, in only improve multi-thread performance by some.
Even if you overclock the P4 to 4Ghz it will still struggle to keep up in W@W.
The Intel graphics don't even come in to play yet, P4s just can't pull their own weight in a semi-modern game like COD: W@W.
Do what you wish, I am just telling you strait.

Very cocky attitude, its fact his statement speaks the truth you can't even play any free download games let alone world at war on a intel intergrated GPU.

Oh well then, do what you wish. If you want to spend more money trying to breathe life into the undead than it would take to build a new, low-end modern rig that will easily be 4x as powerful as your ancient computer, then go ahead. I implore you to ask yourself this: if you can spend less money and end up with a more powerful system, why not do it? Because you like old hardware? Sure, lots of people here like old hardware, myself included, but you don't see me trying to run S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on my Sempron 3000+ system featuring 1GB DDR400 and a GeForce MX4000...

I bet if you put a WTB thread for a AM2 x2 CPU and board you could get a combo for like 45-50$ i know someone has one in the closet!

First off that msi board is garbage its not worth the copper stuffed in the pcb. Second off I really could care less what you overclock your p4 to my sempron mobile in my netbook will still outperform it. As it stands I can game on my droid 2 better than you can on your pc. If you really want to polish a turd than go for it. Just so you know I can't play COD4 on my netbook which is infintely faster than your pc so I don't see how your thinking your pc will.
