The 6950 overclocking limit thread

The 6950 is here, offering interesting performance and price point, which will likely make it quite the popular card.

As W1zzard's review pointed out, the overclocking limits for the 6950, especially the one on the memory, in CCC are a bit on the low side.

Lets post in this thread any information that helps get around that.

Have any of the manufacturers have gone for a higher limiter, like with the previous AMD/ATI generation? Also, links to modified bioses are welcomed too, as well as stories of your personal overclocking successes with the card.

the oc limit on the 6950/6970 is as always constrained by voltage... in this case amd have incorperated powertune to keep things below or at tdp,

sooo it looks like powertune needs modding above and beyond tdp....

wondering what wizard has to say on the matter....
we dont know for sure, but imagine a massive or mediocre increase in performance, above tdp... its going to be cool finding these results out...

I think he's referring to the slider limits in the control panel. Also powertune's slider limit is bios derived, like how the max clock was on some ref. 5850s. A modded bios (really appealing now with the backup switch) or afterburner support to disable/modify it will solve that issue.

In the case of the HD6950 the CCC limits overclocking to 840 on the core whilst on the HD6970 it is limited to 950 on the core.

Guru3d used MSI afterburner to push the clocks on the HD6950 review sample to 873mhz, not a massive boost but a move nonetheless.

Hopefully once voltage control is unlocked we should see the far side of 900 quite easily on the 6950 and 1000 (hopefully) on the 6970.

I have 2 Sapphire HD6950 - modded with asus bios - unlocked cores only.
After that install smartdoctor to unlock catalist overdrive - - my cards work in crossfire 900/1300
with no problems or additional voltage - I experimented with smart doctor - increasing Vcore to 1.18 yielded 1000mhz on core - although not stable - I think WCooled cards should be fine with 1.250 VCORE and 1000/1450

Mine is at 885 with standards settings, i will wait the end of the week or software update for the flash
