Ok I have a seperate room from my house that contains the modem which connects to the net (dont ask me, I didnt design it... It was where the computers were originally) and another modem inside the house connected by a 40m ethernet cable around the house to the main modem (this is what Im connected to).

Heres the problem I can run the internet only one side @ time (my parents have a PC connected to the main modem in the room seperate to the house)... So if I get internet on my PC inside, I can't get it outside and vice versa. It makes for difficult times when we try to both be on @ once.

Any ideas to how I can fix this.

Clarify:
- Internet connected modem in Room seperate from house
- Modem that my brother and I are connected to in house.
- 40m cable connecting the two
- Problem: Can only get net on a computer if the computer on the other modem is disconnected/switched off

Its a very difficult situation so bear with me and ask for clarity on anything

Hi,

To make the description of your network clearer, please tell us what devices you've got there. Preferable exact model / make.
Not everything in there is 'modem'. You've probably got a 'router' and a 'switch' there, but we need to confirm it.

By the description you gave, it seems that you've got a Internet access device (modem) configured as a "bridge" (ability to serve only on PC with Internet connection), and couple of PCs connected to it using network switch(es).
If that's the case, you'll have to reconfigure your 'modem bridge' to become a 'router' (thus, allowing a whole network of PCs to use its Internet connection).

Please tell us what devices you've got there, and what kind Internet Service Provider do you use.

Cheers,

They're both routers But the one in my house is acting like a switch.

Main is a Telstra modem (Australias main internet provider, no idea which model)
One in house Belkin54g

So you need access in both areas. You say the belkin is acting like a switch. Make sure you have NAT turned off, dhcp off, and plug the 40m cable on the belkin to one of the switch ports and not the WAN port.

Computers inside and in the seperate room should be on the same network. So both have an ip: 192.168.1.x

When the issue is occuring, check if all machines are receiving ip addresses. can you ping the main router?

If your trying to hook 2 modems up at one time it wont work unless you call and activate both modems which means 2x the bill also the telco company usually wont let you have 2.

only connect one to the phone/cable line and do what Hybrid Theory said

+1

I've used two modems before in the past (both activated)... Modems were connect to a switch, then which was connected to my router... done

And of coarse the bill will be twice as high... But I know Comcast for sure will allow it.

Why not just connect both computers to the 1 modem?

To get both working, you'll need to set your second, Belkin router, as a bridge. look at the manual for how to do this as for every router it is different. some just have a switch on the back, some have more complicated procedures.

Oh, and you don;t need to put any isp passwords or whatnot in the belkin, just link it to the first modem via the first LAN port (on both modems)

Im guessing you have the belkin linked using the internet port and you have the username password in the belkin. When you do this, you are making the belkin the primary router and the other one just makes a connection. you want the first router to be the connection and then to share that with you belkin....does that make sense?

I just spent 2 days setting up something similar and it was a PITA
