NB (North Bridge) cooling isue

Hi,

Some time ago i noticed that my MB temps are very high (60 Celsius when just turned on and now it tends to show over 100 Celsius) than I realized that it must be a faulty sensor. My PC works flawlessly, no hangs up, no crashes. I decided to remove NB heatsink to see what was happening. Although the heatsink has springs to make better contact with the chip it had some type of glue connecting them. I did not know what it was so I applied a bit of thermal paste and put the heatsink back in place. Everything works fine (besides that faulty sensor) however I am not sure if thermal paste was a good idea after all.

Should I be worried about that? If so what kind of glue should I get ? Besides how can I notice when NB overheats? Any signs? For example when CPU does it decelerates when GPU does you can see black screen and so on.

Thanks for Your time.

thermal paste is better than the thermal pads the initially had applied.

you're quite likely correct on the faulty sensor.

Agreed, i have mx-2 on mine with a little 4000rpm fan, noisiest fan in the comp, lol.

To check it's running cool, put your finger on the Heatsink an do a touch check.

If it's really getting 100c see if you gcan near to touching it if ya can get to touch it it's not 100c. Or you could use some thing on a wire that reads temps.

Some mobo's \ fan controllers have temp sencers on a wire and there is always places like Maplin\Radio Shack that normally sell weather sencers on a wire although not as accurate but would give you a good enough idea if it is over heating.

I hope you removed the old stuff before applying the paste if not you better of changing it.

Well when I turn on my PC in the morning (cooled PC) and go into BIOS to check temps it shows over 60 Celsius for MB. I doubt that it is true, not even my cooker in the kitchen heats so fast in few seconds. It must be faulty sensor. The question is what happens when NB overheats? Does PC crash or hang up or works till it catches on fire? What symptoms should I expect if eventually it does overheat.

oh they certainly CAN heat up really fast.

dont forget your cooker has a much larger area to heat up - the NB is about the size of your fingernail.

overheating will definitely lead to crashing of the system. its a core component, so when it plays up - you know about it.

I had a defective 9800GT that would raise my NB/mobo and cpu temps, when installed in the main slot. Do you have another video card to try ?

I have solved my problem recently it is the sensor in MB. When i turn on my PC I get 108 Celsius reading although the heat sink is cold as ice. Although after playing games for a few hours I barely can touch the heatsink (it gets really hot) I haven't encountered any problems so far.
