Hi, I'm new to these forums. My friend and I are currently trying to build a PC for under $700 AUD (Box only - no OS) and we came up with these parts.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-880G-UD3H Motherboard

RAM: Corsair CMP4GX3M2A1600C9 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3

PSU: Antec Neo Eco 520C 520W Power Supply

GRAPHICS CARD: Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB ST3500418AS

CASE: Gigabyte GZ-X7B Mid Tower Black Case

OPTICAL:We already have a DVD drive

The price of these all parts together from PC Case Gear is $663 AUD

Do you guys have any tips to make the machine better?

Thanks, PSPianist.

We have a few questions

- If we wanted to overclock the CPU, would the stock cooler provide enough cooling or would we have to get an aftermarket cooler?

- Would it be worth upgrading to the AMD Phenom II x6 1055t?

- Would a case with 2 80mm exhaust fans be cool enough to run the parts? (My friend has an old case in the shed)

Thanks, PSPianist.

1.) I would advise against it on an AMD cpu.

2.) Depends on price difference and if it will still keep you in budget. EDIT: On second thought, another thing to factor, how soon do you plan on upgrading after this machine? 1-2 yrs? 3-4?

3.) How many intake?

The build looks good so far, if you can squeeze in a HD6850 video card I would grab that, if not thats ok, the HD5770 & GTX 460 are great cards:toast: and if you plan to overclock your cpu, I do recommend a aftermarket cooler, but you can still overclock it with the stock cooler, just don't go too crazy with the settings:toast:

Its looks like a strong build man! There is nothing wrong with the 5770. However Erocker is right. The 460 is the better buy!

We probably won't upgrade the machine in 1-2 years, instead maybe building a i7 machine since it'll be cheaper then than now.

The case only has 2 exhaust fans, and a vent at the side panel.

In both questions, 1-2yrs with only 2 exhaust and a side vent, go with the x4. What case if you can remember?

Listen. The board you are buying is upgradable to Bulldozer. That means buying an i7 rig at this stage of the game would be stupid. Plus a 955 is MORE then enough to play eveything maxed out currently. Don't listen to the fanboys.

If it was 6 months ago however I would say go Intel.

I thought that Bulldozer will work only on AM3+ Motherboards, and that the current Athlons II and Phenoms II will work on AM3+...

I can't remember what the case name is, sorry. But it's one of the cheaper cases that Centercom uses.

centercom.com.au? Was on that site not too long ago looking. Looks like the now carry name brand cases. I'd just switch out the case while you're at it.

On a side note, do you know the joke that starts off: A man walks into a bar and sees this 10 inch pianist playing a minature piano...

He’s fascinated and watches the man play for a few minutes, then asks the bartender, “How did you find such a tiny man to play the piano?”

The bartender replies, “I found a lamp with a genie in it who granted me one wish.”

“And you asked for a 10-inch pianist?”

“Well, not exactly."

Hahaha

More questions (Sorry)

- We want to connect the computer to my old TV. The thing is that it doesn't have a HDMI port, it only has RCA, S-video (4-pin) and Component. If we choose a Nvidia VGA card and then convert it to RCA, would that work? Or is there another way of connecting it?

Thanks, PSPianist

More questions (Sorry)

- We want to connect the computer to my old TV. The thing is that it doesn't have a HDMI port, it only has RCA, S-video (4-pin) and Component. If we choose a Nvidia VGA card and then convert it to RCA, would that work? Or is there another way of connecting it?

Thanks, PSPianist

yes, look for HDMI to RCA cable

Nearly all the newer nVidia cards go by HDMI. Not to mention sVideo doesn't look too keen converted from a PC's video card. You could do it though with using a DVI->VGA adapter in conjunction with this....

Svideo adapter.

HDMI to RCA is expensive, I only found one and it was 149 bucks. I guess it beats buying a new monitor for the computer though.

I would purchase the new monitor cause no offense, it is going to look cruddy. Oh also, 99% of video cards come with DVI->VGA.
