My fps are quite low for a 5970 Oc version and I would like to ask if my cpu could be the cause for such a vast fps difference. Would I see significant fps increase if OCed to 3.2 ghz? Because when I do and after quitting bios, I loose monitor signal and the screen remains black and I have to reset bios, so thatswhy i use only 2.76 ghz.

Here are few of my results, everything on max settings,1920x1200, newest drivers and profiles, psu 650w CorsairTx:

Mafia 2 benchmark (AA on, Physx Off): 50.5 fps
Far cry 2 Small ranch(8xAA): 53 fps
Just cause 2(8xAA 16xAF) - Dark tower: 63 fps
- Desert sunrise 73 fps
Crysis benchmark tool(4xAA, time of day:9, dx10, level Island): 32 fps

^^ Depends on the games dude

For 2 core savvy games, yes an Overclock would help a lot.
For multi-core savvy games, not much improvement, but yes there will be progress

I'd try OC'ing that, but since the systems seems not to like it, you're pretty much out of luck. I wonder why you can't get more of this chip though, 3.2 doesn't seem a far cry. Maybe its down to the psu, something beefier maybe? the 5970 has a tdp of ~300W and since its OC'ed... Well there are a lot of possibilities. Might want to try things one step at a time to get to the root of the problem.

It could be a wide range of things.. first if you could post your
Ram
Mobo
Power Supply

If you overclock and get a black screen on post you likely have the ram out of wack and its refusing to boot. If its an Asus board I'd bet my last dollar on that.

Your FPS are a little low for sure and the latest CCC release does not play well with the 5970
10.10e is one of the best to date for your card.

Even with the best possible OC on that CPU it will always bottneck a 5970. Unless you can get a QX9650 @ 6Ghz on LN2 no s775 CPU can truely provide the 5970 with the throughput required to let the card run free.

Even @ 4Ghz my q9550 is holding my 5970 back in a few games (especially BC2)

agreed
but if he was to overclock it to say 3200MHz that would be 400FSB and would boost the rig nicely.
Depending if the board is up to the task he could drop the multi to 7 and run 457FSB it would improve things quite a bit.

Yea i noticed this with my GTX 285 i had. I changed from a 965BE to a I7 920 and it increased FPS in certain games by about 20 FPS

that sounds like a psu problem to me...

try overclocking after disconnecting any extra hd and optical drives, and anything else you dont need to boot into windows....

also, make sure you dont raise the pcie bus above 110mhz... or just leave it at 100mhz...

its strange you should lose video signal....

can you take a pic of your bios and show us what changes your making...

good luck....

all those games have single threaded graphics (not DX11) so yes, single threaded performance matters.

IMO yes - you are being held back by the single threaded performance of your CPU
Thats not to say a higher clocked dual would be any better, because you may need the extra threads.

Definitely OC. 3.2Ghz sounds quite achievable.

this

i think guru3d did a review where they tested LGA775 vs LGA1366 with dual gpu's, and the difference was astounding

For sure. Any OC will help.

Could you post the link please because I cant find it. Anyway, I decided but i52500k so that should do it I hope. But I have to wait for Intel to re-supply 1155 motherboards, hope they will make it till the end of this month.
