Doom is not really a cultural icon ether. Only reason why some older people may know him is because of Columbine.

Well in the first books he was Flynn Taggart. As for being "Iconic" you are wrong. Doom, Quake, Team Fortress, Battlefield are not house hold names in places that do not worship videogames.

As a matter of fact its damn near impossible for any game now to capture what Pac-Man and Mario did in the 80's to our culture. They were groundbreaking. Its like replacing Coca-Cola or Pepsi. You cannot do it.

children in the third grade recognize and play Halo and Call of Duty. when they get older those games will become the Xevious, Strider, Ikari Warriors of the generation.

Its influential to the game industry. Not to anything else. Not to everyday life. Thats the difference. We are talking cultural icons. Not gaming icons.

Ask someone in Bogota Colombia if they have ever heard of Doom.... then ask them if they have ever heard of Pacman.. There is your answer. Dooms following is privy to North Americans but that's pretty much it. People like the game but it is in no way an icon.

You want a REAL icon? David Bowie... He's an icon, he had people dressing like him for YEARS. He set trends and changed the way people think just like Elvis did, just like the Beatles did, just like Madonna did, just like dungeons and dragons did... These are examples of cultural icons.

1992 was in my eyes one of the best years in PC gaming...That's when I got an external CD-ROM and Sound Blaster Pro 16 for my 386sx 16mhz, 20mhz on turbo...DOS 5.0 Gaming Machine!
I remember you had to go into the auto.exe batch files to tell the drivers where to load in the system memory cause you only had 640k and most games needed 628k to run with digitized speech...and joysticks plugged into the sound card....You really had to want to play a game in those days....It's also when FPS shooters came out...aka....Wolfenstein 3D...and I got to tell ya games are like infinity better now than they were back then

Doom 3. Now that was SCARY! I had to play it with the lights on and no sound just to keep from jumping everytime a zombie was after me.... Also, Sometimes I just wouldn't go into a room and do a save quit until the next morning. It was sooooo scary.

Another game from 1992 that still effects todays games is XF5700 Mantis!!
It had Newtonian PHYSICS.....to bad the enemy ships didn't have physics they would just try to do suicide runs at you after you shot them one time...was a little predictable....

I disagree. Infinitely easier to get going? Yes. But most do not have gameplay that's nearly as intriguing. We've mostly only gotten better graphics from most titles, and actually have gotten less in terms of total gameplay hours for our money. Hardly anybody even tries to innovate these days, they just spew the same rehashed garbage over and over, just like CoD.
