Pretty much any way you go you are going to get quality loss. It is a balancing act between quality loss and the space the move takes up.

For me, I rip all my DVDs using the Xvid codec. For me that give the best balance between quality and space. Of course, even once you pick a codec, the settings you use can greatly affect quality and size as well. I rip most of my movies so that a 1:30 move takes up about 800MB, there is a quality loss, but it isn't really noticeable.

From what I've seen H264 isn't really necessary unless you are ripping HD content.

As for programs, I'm sure they aren't supposed to be talked about here, so I won't go into details about what I use.

You'll want to use Xvid then, since the PS3 supports that natively. I don't think it supports H264 natively.

I dont think it does Xvid actually?
h.264 is the most broadly used i think...

Yeah, I just checked that, H264 is supported. I know XviD works because that is what I use. I don't like H264 because the file sizes are too big, it just wasn't worth it for me since the quality wasn't any noticeably better than XviD.

Plus it was easier for me to setup an automated method with XviD than H264, but back when I did it, there wasn't a lot of H264 tools around because it was relatively new compared to XviD/DivX. That way I can set up 20 movies to convert when I leave for work, and when I come home they are all done. That was great when I first converted my entire collection of about 400 movies.

You might as well try both for a test, see whatever you're comfortable with size/quality wise. I know I'm pickier than most on image quality.

the only problem i have had recently is the audio and video not being synced. quality isnt a huge deal but i dont want it to be unwatchable.

the ps3 will play xvid but it will not play x264 natively. we are still petitioning sony to add native x264 support. dont think it will happen though...with sony owning part of the bluray license and all.
