A friend of mines computer just stopped working today. At first, it was giving problems booting (wouldnt get to loading hd), and now it simply wont start. The motherboard has a light and its still getting power (mouse still lights up when its plugged in, ect), but hitting the power button is getting me nowhere (it doesnt work atm). It was a custom built computer in either 2000 or 2001, and it has an asus motherboard.

Basically, any1 have any idea's as to whats wrong with it? I know its old, but im trying to help him fix it

Not always , hell you can some times have fans still going & have a bad/"dead" PSU

Not to forget , there is more than just 1 voltage regulator in a PSU (12v/5v/3.3v) one of them or more may have die ;)

Yep, PSU is most likely. If it isn't the PSU, it is probably the mobo.

It sounds like the motherboard has become 'earthed' on the case. the only thing you can do is strip everything out and rebuild it again and make sure the mobo is seated correctly.

If you do choose to strip it out - take the PSU out also and test the system out of the case just to make sure it is indeed a hardware issue and not just earthed. give the PSU a good blast with compressed air too, god knows how much dust has accumilated in there since 2000. do make sure the powers off & unplugged first before you give it a shot of compressed air for safety reasons. it would also be advisable to have a hoover pointed at the vents/PSU when you blast it or dust will get everywhere and make more mess to clean up. best thing to do would be to do it in the garden.
