I dont think this problem is from your GPU, most likely is from CPU/MOBO or a software running in background.

A bios update isn't a magic fix, it probably won't offer any benefits and could be risky if you got a bios designed for a slightly faster XL model. The best driver is ATI's driver (plenty will argue, but it is always out first and the other drivers manage almost no improvement). The only things you can do to help is ensure you are free of viruses and spyware (sounds like you've already done this), run something like CCleaner to get rid of files cluttering up your drive and defragment it.

Other than that, all you can do is overclock or upgrade, an updated BIOS won't do anything I'm afraid.

Jimmy is right on this one. BIOS updates on GPUs do absolutely nothing for performance. Drivers are your best bet. The catalyst 6.9 drivers are said to be the best for the x800 series cards.

If you're getting lag in high density areas, the only thing you can do is turn down the graphics.

Some more info on your system specs can tell us a little more, and perhaps we could help you more.

Only other thing I could recommend would be a fresh install of XP, other than that your hardware is the problem and you'd need to upgrade. Not sure why your FPS would be lower on low settings. You could try using DriverCleanerPro (you'll have to download it from a mirror, the newer versions aren't free) and removing your ATI Drivers and doing a clean reinstall.

My house.
Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane @ 2.8GHz (224x12.5, 1.425V)
Motherboard Gigabyte sumthin-or-another, it's got an nForce 430
Cooling Dual 120mm case fans front/rear, Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, Zalman VF-900 on GPU
Memory 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800
Video Card(s) Sapphire X850XT @ 580/600
Storage WD 160 GB SATA hard drive.
Display(s) Hanns G 19" widescreen, 5ms response time, 1440x900
Case Thermaltake Soprano (black with side window).
Audio Device(s) Soundblaster Live! 24 bit (paired with X-530 speakers).
Power Supply ThermalTake 430W TR2
Software XP Home SP2, can't wait for Vista SP1.
Flashing your card to the latest BIOS will leave you bitterly dissapointed. On the off-chance that it actually works, you'll boot with no change in pipelines (you already have them all enabled), and a very small change in clocks. You'll get about one or two FPS more than you would without flashing. You'd get a much better framerate jump by either getting more memory, overclocking the memory/cpu you have, or just buying more memory (or maybe even buying a graphics card with more memory).

I don't even think there are "bios updates" for gpus. I think they just come with the factory bios on them. People just mod them to get higher clocks and/or more pixel pipelines. You have to be stable at higher clocks anyways for the mod to be effective.

I would look into what Jimmy said about a fresh install of XP, format the HDD and all that good stuff.

Yeah, there are now BIOS updates as such, but some cards may have a slightly different BIOS from others. However, like zek says, this will give you almost no change in performance or it will not be compatible with your card so it isn't really worth it. BIOSs tend to come with the fasted settings that manufcaturers can apply without damaging the card, and overclocking through ATITool is the best way to improve performance.

What score do you get in 3Dmark05? This isn't a concrete test but it will give us some idea as to whether you card performs as you'd expect in that.

That's a bit too low for an X800 XL, you should be getting a similar score to me. How much RAM do you have?

Something is up I think - you're card is more or less the same speed as mine, you have the same amount of RAM but yours is dual channel, your CPU shouldn't be much slower than mine if any... All I can recommend is cleaning drivers then a format.

Well some companies will offer slightly overclocked versions of cards, but if they have the same name they are based on the same core. Sapphire tend to offer pretty standard, some manufacturers will actually sell the cards with slower memory so that they aren't as quick (I think that happens more with Nvidia cards) but you can normally check the speeds before you buy and compare them to the GPU database on this site.

Maybe you turn on antialising and AF. It is recomended that it's aplication controlled.

And tell us how many MB are windows taking.

Threads don't get closed for a long time here, unless there are arguements. It's a good idea, in case someone has a problem which they can help someone else with if they visit the forums a few months later with a similar problem.

I HAVE 4300 points!!!!

Should be getting closer to 5k. I used to get 4900 with a stock x800xl and p4 530 with a gig of valueram.

When I ran CSS, i couldnt have AA/AF maxed put. Thats most likely your problem. Maps with HDR also give a huge hit. Turn that off.

X800XL does not suport HDR
