Help Needed - How to get a CRT workng with HD 5870?

Hi guys. I'm trying to get a 21inch DELL P1130 CRT Monitor working with my HD 5870. I have a DVI cable attached to the HD 5870 input and then the other end is plugged into a DVI to VGA adapter which is plugged into the VGA input of the monitor but no display.

On the monitor it says "monitor is working" Check input selector.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm on windows 7 64bit.

hmm, On the CRT, is there a menu button? Maybe something in there?

Random thing which came to my mind: DVI has 2 flavours, Analog and Digital. Perhaps you are using the digital version, since that CRT only supports Analog?

Google DVI connections.
There are specific pins that must be present on the cable to transfer analog signals.
Not all DVI cables have them.

have you tried both DVI ports on the card? I know on my 6950 one DVI port supports VGA while the other doesnt

What I was just about to recommend. It should work, it's what I do at my workplace.

Mars, I have a trio of P1130s that I have used with 5870s before. The way tigger suggests works perfectly. I now use them regularly with GTX 470s and GTS 450s in the same way, no problem.

Great monitor BTW. Is yours in good shape?

OMFG!!

I found an old vga/dvi adapter which worked the other way around so I have now managed to get it working :toast:

I have it running at 1920 x 1440 @ 85Hz and the picture quality is friggin awesome :eek:

Motion blur has gone and everything is clear as crystal in games. I'm never going back to LCD. Well, not until they have new tech which gets rid of any motion blur.

It may not be widescreen but when it's 21" and in your face with a nice high resolution it's amazing :laugh:

Best thing about all this, I bought it for 1p off ebay :eek:

It's in immaculate condition as well.

Amazing, very happy chappy right here. Now to test out all my games and see what they are meant to look like as opposed to what I have been seeing previously.

That's awesome man, I paid more than you but mine were still cheap at $10 each. I'm glad most people don't value them too highly. :laugh:

The colors and lack of input lag are nice but what really surprised me was how much easier it is to track movement clearly during fast-paced action. I usually run mine at 1600x1200 @ 100Hz and the smoothness is sweet. I actually like the 4:3 aspect ratio personally just because it gives you more screen area than widescreen does, for a given diagonally-measured size.

I think that when you switch from CRT to LCD, the difference often seems minor. But then when you get used to LCD and go back to CRT, you really notice.

1920x1440 is a widescreen res. how can you have that on a 4:3 CRT screen which your monitor got a max of 1600x1200 something not right here...:shadedshu

1920x1440 is 4:3. Widescreen at 1920 pixels wide would be 1920x1200 (16:10) or 1920x1080 (16:9). While 1800x1440 is the listed max res for the P1130, up to 2048x1536 has been widely reported to work well on this model.

TIGR - any way to increase the sharpness of the screen? I don't have a manual and it probably still needs callibrating.

I have my first problem

Rebooting and going back to my EFI bios, it's not resizing and is displaying 640x480 therefore I cannot see all of my bios options.

Any way I can get it to resize as I switch between hard drives quite alot and need to access it regularly?

EDIT - That looks like a nice one tigger.

Yeah! i somehow mix that res with 1440x900 lol!
But he is lucky to go over 1600x1200 , i had 2x 21" CRT in the past & couldn't go over 1600x1200 even if one of them had a max res. of 2048x1536

Anyways i am not missing it at all at least my LCD doesn't shoot me with x-ray...
Beside i like better widescreen view more natural for the eyes as we all see 180 degrees wide

I would like to have a monitor that is wider then 16:9 but i guess until they make such monitors i'll have to stick with Eyefinity (if when ever can afford 2 other monitors?)

BTW: Enable V-sync takes care of most motion problems in games LCD or not
