in retarded hell
not counting tessellation performance, perhaps, but that ~5fps increase from that bench you run there doesn't look promising with that amount of OC, try another like 3DM11 with both OC settings and if again there isn't too much increase there is a bottleneck - but I cant quote anything.

he was talking about your average FPS. That is alot more important than your max FPS, as a high average FPS is what makes a game run smooth.

TBH, your processor is bottlenecking the card. I get more than that with my cpu@stock,hd 5870@stock and at 2048x1536 resolution with everything on apart from physx, therefore any ocing gains are going to be minimal.

Nice work though :)

EDIT - unless of course you are running the test with vsync enabled without realising?

I'll take a stab & say you're running the memory far too high.
There's not really a great advantage to be had from running this as fast as you can get it - try 1200 max.
My Vantage score (using the CCC max of 775/1125) was 17115 (15132 GPU). Your score at that OC should be significantly higher, but it isn't. So.. I'm guessing the memory on your 5850 is throwing up errors and reducing performance.
Try it at 1200 and see what score you get :)

Aware of that, it's well known that a properly clocked HD 5850 can bypass a stock HD 5870.

I actually think Jack Doph hit the nail on the head. When the memory is improperly clocked it can cause errors which may not manifest themself in actual crashes but just poor performance.

Yep! something is wrong we got pretty much same CPU performance & i can do 13400 with my 6850 stock & 15560 with my card overclock at 1010/1135

I shouldn't be able to beat him in any benchmarks :wtf:

Exactly. Hence the need to downclock that memory a bit.
At anything over 1200, you're really getting adventurous without any significant gain of any kind on the HD5850.
The biggest gain will always be had from upping the core :)

Wow, seriously? No wonder i don't feel like its been too big a jump going from my gtx260 to my 5870 (not to mention i had to lower ram multi to 1.66 to get my proc to run @ 3.45, otherwise hangs)

Will I get a sizable improvement going to SB or something? (dun mean to hijack the thread tho :p)

Absolutely. It's normally the case that a graphics card upgrade will be the biggest upgrade you can do to improve your framerates regardless to some degree of the processor.

However, it works by the lowest denominator. So for example, at 1920x1080 resolution a certain CPU may be capable of only displaying say 55fps max for a game whereas the graphics card could be capable of 75fps, the graphics card will be restricted to the CPU's performance therefore will only display the 55fps.

It's always good to have some sort of balance regarding the CPU matched up with the GPU. Understand though that at higher resolutions the gap between the framerates CPU's can produce becomes smaller. That said though, I have seen a difference by just upgrading my 4GHZ 1090T to a 2500 K. Bulldozer is out this year and is supposed to be bringing massive gains. Anyone using AMD would be wise to consider the upgrade at some point if they are a serious gamer.

Well man, all I can say is I replaced acouple of GTX280 that I was running in SLI with a single 5870(my GFX cards I had went like this- GTX260/single GTX280/ pair GTX280 in SLI/ single 5870). While I saw a increase in performance going from the GTX260 to a GTX280, and I saw a nice increase in performance with the addition of the second GTX280. When I went to the single 5870, I was kinda worried about a drop in performance, but the single 5870 was fast enough that I didn't notice a difference.

If your not seeing a nice increase in performance going from a GTX260 to a 5870, something is definently bottle-necking your computer.

Second the memory problem from JD. Try running it at stock with your core at 1ghz to see if there is a difference. memory makes a tiny difference for most benches anyway. Non stock 5850s can struggle with 1200 memory (I know mine does).

Run 3dmark11. I got 4500 odd on the standard P test.
