Short story: polaroid tv went black while watching it. If i shut it off and turn it back on you can see the screen for about 2 seconds and it fades out. Poloroid says its 2 capacitors and this is a known issue. Instead of waiting for them to get around to shipping me the caps can i replace them with a standard radial cap? do i match the voltages and farad or one or the other. Does it matter? the caps i need are 450V 10uf where can i get these, any reputable companies for this?

DigiKey is a good place to start, they sell all sorts of electronics.

Did Poloroid give a part no?

For a possible quicker purchase, you might check with your local Radio Shack. I know in this area that have a large cabinet with about 15 drawers that contain capacitors.

If they don't then I agree with Mlee, DigiKey is a great company.

need to match both. you can use higher or equal voltage rating and similar capacity rating (8-12 uF will be fine i'd say)

It's been my experience that when you have a "known problem with capacitors" in a device it is usually caused by the caps being too low on the voltage rating (or they are using cheap crap).
I would look for 10uF caps that are rated a bit higher than 450V.
Just make sure the caps have the same type of dielectric as the original and that they will properly fit where the old ones where removed.

As stinger said, I usually hit the local 'Shack as they have a pretty fair selection of more commonly used capacitors. Failing that, any reputable electronic component retailer will be able to get you what you need. (ie. Grainger, McMaster-Carr, Newark, etc.)

I replace bad caps on computers all the time.

My rule is exact same farad, and same OR higher voltage.

As nv40pimp said, equal or greater voltage is recommended and is a smart decision as to give safety room for over voltage.
