i may not have been prepared in what my interests were in my first thread but i went out into the great vast internet and have come to a road block.

I need an SLI (or single card, in that case ATI or Nvidia will work. no prefrence) setup. ill be running 4 monitors. So i need 2 video cards and a power supply for $500. I currently am running a PC P&C 610 silencer. 3/4 of the monitors will be for gaming. most likely i will only use 1 for the most part.

many current ATi videocards support four monitors natively? Sapphire HD6850FLEX and bascially any AMD-approved 500W PSU?

its not mostly the ability to display 4 monitors. its the matter of running them well.

my motherboard is PCIE16 based. is that compatable with PCIE 2.0?

OH, then forget any single system, and that budget. I have dual 6950's, and if you are refering to gaming, let me just say that while I have both cards and 3 matched monitors for Eyefinity, I've relgated down to a single card and single monitor, as 3D performance with multiple monitors SUCKS! 2d, well, still dealing with the odd cursor corruption from mis-matched display outputs on my setup.

i wasnt exactly buying this setup specifically for "eyefinity" i enjoy real estate, and can afford it. i suspect most of my gaming will be done using 1 monitor

If you are only gaming on one monitor, then a single 6950 2GB will be great at almost everything @ 1920x1080, and plays most apps well with 8xAA, and will support 4 monitors. no need for 2 cards.


Ah, your last post popped up as I was posting mine...thats' the right direction, i think.

now for my question about the cross compatability between PCIE x16 and PCIE 2.0. i am running the motherboard in my system specs.

hmm, yeah, while the card will work fine, there are some boards that have PCIe compatibility issues from that generation of products. I am not sure if it will work OK, but I CAN tell you that PCIe 2.0 x8 is equivalent to PCIe 1.0 x16, in terms of provided bandwidth.

Well, i suppose theres only 1 way to find out. if it doesnt work properly it will simply give me an excuse to build an entirely new computer.

I highly doubt it's going to be a problem. It's simply going to run at half the bandwidth which at worst will show a 3% decrease in performance compared to a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot. You should be good to go, and I think that is a great choice for a card. I have the GTX 570 variant and I absolutely adore it.
