Quick facts:

I'm looking to upgrade a lot of my computer, all the main bits.

I'm not replacing HDDs, DVD Drive, Case or PSU at the moment.
So I'm looking to buy:

Motherboard
RAM
CPU
Maybe a new GPU.

I am in the UK!

Budget: £400 - £500 ish, depending on if I get a new graphics card as well.

More detail:

I don't have much time for games these days, but do want to have the option available, so it's got to be capable of more than web browsing.

I would like to upgrade my monitor in the near future. When I do, it will be a 1920 x 1080 monitor, so if I do get talked in to getting a new graphics card, this will need to be taken in to account.

On the subject of graphics cards, I hate loud ones. My 3870 was too loud, so I got an Arctic Cooling Acellero 1 Rev.2 Cooler for it. I'm happy enough to buy a new cooler if this one one fit/can't be reused for whatever reason, but I am a little aprehensive about the card breaking and me not being able to send it back.

I am very much out of the loop on hardware these days and don't have much free time to research it all again.

I'm not much of an overclocker, I've dabbled in the past on both CPU and GPU, but I've never kept anything overclocked. To be honest, these days I wouldn't really know where to start anymore.

Main reasons for upgrading are things like, wanting to be able to play games on high settings on a bigger monitor eventually. Almost every HDD I buy seems to fail very quickly, I am starting to think it's not the HDDs themselves at fault, probably something to do with the rest of my computer. And I suppose I want nice shiney new toys to play with too.

1) HDD don't die normally out of nowhere. PSU could be source of problems. As for newer hardware you'l want a new PSU I would buy established brands like Antec, Corsair, etc with solid performance and all the connections.
With or without issues, get used to making a backup, using SyncToy or whatever you like

2) Ram is cheap these days. State of the art mobos can be bought for 150 Euros (or less), add a cpu for 170 euros and for 450 euros you are fine for all you need, including a new PSU. (450 euros is a lot less than 450 pounds...)

add a decent psu to that and you have a solid pc, you could save some doe all in going for an AMD APU A8 3650 and FM1 mobo as them paired are 200quid plus 40-90 for some mem and a psu at 70-80 and your done for 350 and it would be quite capable

Sounds good to me. No reviews on that motherboard on the site. Anyone know much about it?

Also, I assume that RAM will work with that mobo? (I've recently heard lots about people buying RAM that doesn't work on their motherboards for some reason.)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Anyone else have different ideas?

Actually HDD's die out of nowhere all the time. In desktop systems you don't see it often because the HD's are usually not working all the time.

However, in a data center environment you start to notice that HDD's die CONSTANTLY out of nowhere. Sometimes there is absolutely no warning signs from SMART etc. Just saying, any computer part can die at any moment without warning.

I think I'm going to get the bits BarbaricSoul suggested, but am also going to get a new PSU.

Can anyone suggest a good one for me? If I had little knowledge of the other bits, I have NO knowledge of power supplies!

Thanks all so far!
