According to VR-Zone, NVIDIA are set to release cheaper versions of their latest card, the GeForce 8800, during mid February. Based on the same core as the 8800GTS, the cards will run at exactly the same speeds but will only have half the memory size, with 320MB instead of 640MB. Because it is essentially the same it is likely to still be called the 8800GTS, but with a $100 price cut on this less powerful version bringing it to $299, it should be more capable of fighting back ATI's 1950 cards price-wise. Hopefully NVIDA will release its Vista drivers soon so gamers can take a look at DirectX 10.

If there not going to change the name, this makes me think that the original 8800GTS will become unavailable and that possibly it would be a good idea to pick one up now.

No not at all, its no different to the 1900XT in either 256MB or 512MB guise, when they brought the 256 version out the 512 didnt disapear.

nah its just like i thought, when the specs for the Amd card came out as they have they would make the current top cards the middle range cards, they would make a slightly lower spec card and they will make a monster card when the AMD card is released no doubt that is the plan by nvidia. if this $299 does transulate to £150 retail for us UK consumers i may just run out and get one but no doubt i exspect they lan on releasing it here for over the £200 mark

It doesnt matter, to me, the 1950 Pro is better than the GTS. Granted, it may have DX 10, but is there really a need for it? NO.

I hope you aren't suggesting that the 1950pro is as fast (or anywhere near) the 8800GTS in any form.... That would be retarded.

Nice move, 640MB memory seems like a crazy overkill and 320MB is still better than 256MB. Not that I'm bying a new GPU any time soon, but if I was this one would be one choice (at the moment the only, until AMTI brings out something).

I think he is saying that the 1950Pro is more than sufficient for his needs at the moment and no point in spending more than you need to. In my case I game at fairly high res and its unlikely a 1950pro at higher res would run say oblivion with everything maxed in outdoor scenes smoothly at 40+ FPS, not sure there, just guessing.

I too would not run out to buy ANY card at the moment, I will only replace when I want to say play a game that my card(s) is/are not capable of playing smoothly, then I know its time to change. I apply the same general rule to my system also.

But you are right.....the 1950Pro is clearly not better than the 8800GTS in anyone but a fanboys book, in fact it aint better than an aweful lot of cards, even half a dozen or so ATi cards if you wanted to disregard ALL NVidia in fact probably only the 8800GTX is better than the GTS at the moment.

This watered down version of the 8800gts does not seem so bad. most likely get some good performance from it,with a smaller price tag too. And in..... sli :)
Still like to know what
Ati has up its sleeve ;)

lol - I went from a 1950xt to a 8800gts and saw a massive difference.
