It will help if you can first tell us which company made the 8800GT.

And, Gen2 should work with Gen1 motherboard (If you have PCIEx 2.0 and you plug it in PCIEx 1.0 it should work).

Well, that's on paper. If I remember it correctly there are rare cases where motherboards (usually motherboards with VIA chipsets) did not work with GEN 2 VGA mode videocards such as the Geforce 8800gt. Only solution was a bios update for the videocard to put back the GEN 1 VGA mode on the videocard.

I thought the GEN1/GEN2 issues were fixed with the release of the Geforce 9800gt, and a 9800gt is just a rename of 8800gt, so flashing with a 9800gt bios would fix the problem you are having now; there were people who were flashing their older 8800gt to match their 9800gt for using SLI. There are XFX 9800gt bioses in Techpowerup's vga bios collection. And the only thing you have to do is finding out which XFX 9800gt bios will work with your 8800gt. Bioses with small OC clocks shouldn't cause problems, but the bioses for XXX edition may cause troubles because the extreme high clocks for gpu/mem.

Make sure you make a backup of the original video bios of the 8800gt before flashing, so at least you can flash it back, so you can use it with a motherboard with pci-e 2.x when something went wrong; and I hate to say it, but there's always a chance of bricking the card in the process, so do it at your own risk.

Here's more info which may help: http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/444820-8800gt-sli-9800gt.html

Good luck!

NVFlash 5.100.0.1 for Windows might work?
oh and another question. im gonna flash it on my "new" pc with hd 5850. ofc ill remove it while flashing but do i need to delete any drivers etc from system?

Hi,

No floppy drive and usb pendrive? Perhaps you can make use of those boot CDs, but I haven't used it myself in the past, so I don't have any experience with them. Maybe more people here have more experience with flashing bioses using the BootCDs.

Or you can (as you already have said) use nvflash for windows; but personally, I prefer flashing videocards etc. in DOS mode which is supposed to be more stable, i.e. safer.

As for removing drivers on the other PC before flashing the videocards, I am not sure if you are flashing it in Windows (no driver=safer/more stable?), but if you are making use of Bootdisk/CD, then you don't have to remove the ATI/AMD driver since you are flashing the card in DOS mode.

ok i have few problems to flash bios.
first one is to run nvflash at bios.
i run dos mode with 98win startup disk using hp usb disk storage format tool. everything is fine my sd card can boot in dos mode.
i copied nvflash.exe (5.1 ver) to card, CWSDPMI.exe and boot to make bios backup.
everytime i run nvflash -b 01.rom im getting error that nvflash cannot run in dos mode.
so i tried older version, and than i type nvflash --list to check is it detect my card and nothing.
error that no nvidia card is detected.
what im doing wrong? how to run nvflash ver 5.1 in dos?
sorry for my english
maybe other software to flash?

ok i found solution.
i used nvflash 5.57 ver and this one works fine, backup already done.
no i have failed to flash one of 9800gt bios.
some error that id something not match to my card. so now im gonna flash every bios to success :)

k flash is done with this bios: XFX.9800GT.512.081124
anyway im at winxp atm, and i cant check card in gpu-z. no info at all. im gonna test this card at old pc so im give more info tomorrow.

k everything looks ok. my asrock dual-vsta detect my new-old 9800gt :) 275.33 drivers instaled. great boost in wow :) all setting set to ultra (also water effect which i could set to fairly only on my x1950pro) and good fps around 40-100 :) not big boost in cod2 (i guess cpu is bottleneck gpu.)
anyway thx for big help.
Regards

Hi,

Nice to hear that your Geforce 8800GT is now working correctly as a Geforce 9800GT:D with your Asrock dual-vsta motherboard.
