My cpu Core I5 2410M hits 80 - 85C @ 1.8GHz and Gpu GT540 hits 73C using ThrottleStop for games. Considering the Max temp for the I5 is 100C. Gpu can get way hotter. Will these temps be ok? I think so.

These temps are ok for gaming sessions less than 1-2 hours at a time. Longer times will cause problems, trust me I've had two laptops die of heat exhaustion. Both power ports melted along with the plastic cover. :/

Yeah, I had to go through that when i had no desktop... I actually melted the bottom of my laptop! If you have one of those laptop fans that you put on the bottom you should be fine.. I used a table fan pointed at the laptop :3

blanket statement if i ever heard one...

Ignore this BS.

All laptops are different, and some are better ventillated then others. and not all laptops have cooling problems. Like some may claim.

If laptops werent meant to game. then there would be no need for highend Crossfired/SLi'd or highend GPUs and quad core processors if all everyone was going to be doing was surfing the web and wordprocessing.

I had a BenQ S73G with a X1600MR built in. I had it longer then 5 years and it played everything from guildwars to oblivion to CoD, CoD2, CS:S and TF2....

its a timeline x, I have seen worst on those things its not a gaming notebook though(more of a ultraportable), also it should downclock before it overheats, is yours downclocking or just overheating without trying to.

I'm pretty sure that's what ruined my laptop's graphic cards in the first place -- gaming for over 3 or 4 hours at a stretch...

IMO... you dont buy a £2000 Alienware or any other 'gaming' laptop just to put it in a glass cabinet and admire it.

Sure! heat is detrimental to the operational life of ANY hardware. but BOTH your 8800's died. coincidence much?? which leads me to believe that it wasnt the gaming that killed it.

and it could be either of these reasons:

#1 - The cards generally have a high fail rate. which means they were factory defective from the get go.

#2 - Inadequate ventillation/cooling. Make sure the heatsink is free from dust - use an air duster.

Grease up the fans with a little 3in1 oil.

Make sure theres enough vents on your laptop for the fans to pull cool air into the chasis to keep everything cool

I have gamed on an old laptop with a X1600MR for longer then 4hrs pretty much everyday in the past and its still around and working fine.

sure it probably creates less waste heat. but my point is. gaming wont kill it unless there was something already wrong with the laptop in the first place

from the way the vents on your laptop are on the bottom and the way that cooler is, it should be helping it. If not, you may want to pop the cover off and use a can of compressed air (with the thin red straw attached) and try and work the straw close to where the Heat Sink is. on the side i think. or from the outside if that's easier just make sure the dust comes out of the laptop somehow rather than blown deep inside it somewhere.

you can try a program called speedfan. it should allow you to force your fan's speed to max which should help a lot during gaming.

Speedfan

or you can try this program... it was meant for Dell PCs but it sometimes works with others. Seeing as Dell uses Foxconn for a lot of their stuff, and many other manufacturers do as well, it should work on a lot of PCs other than Dell.

i8kfan (dell app)

It'll be a bit noisy, but will keep your pc much cooler. also, if your gpu has a seperate fan, download nVidia Sytem Tools 6.06. Its a slightly older app but it does integrate fully into the new driver package. after you install it go to your nvidia control panel and you'll see a new section wanting you to agree to some agreement.

Apparently yes, my laptop never complained before I got Fallout New Vegas (and got hooked on the game and it being summer I had no choice except to play it on laptop. That was when card #1 died.....)

I think it's #1.

I used to dismantle that thing every 3 months, including removing all 4 heatsinks entirely (it has 4 heatsinks and 4 fans, one each for cpu, ram, and 2 graphic cards). Never left a tiny bit of dust there.

Laptop always run on NC2000 Zalman cooler. Plus while gaming I always pressed Fn+1 to have all fans run at full speed for cooling.

GPU's never went over 75 degrees, but I think probably their vram's went a different road........

After getting hooked on New Vegas (it was bad I even put the game on pause while I ate) one card gave up. Laptop worked well on the other card for around a year. Then I let my kid play the Sims 3 on it. She'd game, leave the game running alone for a couple of hours and return. Suddenly BSOD's galore, then artifacting during bootup. *poof* after a couple of days of her doing so the other card got fried.

My conclusion is that laptops, no matter how hardy, are no comparison to desktops. I learnt this late, and the hard way too - better a mediocre desktop than a high-end lappie. :ohwell:

have you tried baking the GPUs? It worked for my 8800GT in my desktop.

I think having the air-con on might have helped :p

I still stand by what i previously said. But i would never get an uber desktop replacement laptop for gaming as i have a super desktop, Id be happy with a midrange laptop that can handle light to medium gaming but never a top range alienware.

If i was given one for free then cool. but i would never go out of my way just to get one. it takes a proper investment and I just bought a HP DM1 for light gaming on the go.
