GTX570 Power Supply Question

Hello, i bought a 570 and it should arrive tomorrow or friday. However it says it needs a 38A in the 12v, mine has 34A (16+18).

I've read the sticky and it says:

Amperage: For a single video card system, you want to have about ~20-35 amps depending on how many things you have in your system.(generally amd systems require more amperage, and you want more amps if you have all the dimm slots full,etc.) you want to have about ~40+ amps for a multi video card system(sli/crossfire).

Currently i have a Q9550, 2 SATA HDD (One is for backup, but not RAID), only 2 slots are using RAM and a DVD-RW. I don't have anything else besides the case Fans, no PCI or PCIe cards besides the graphics card.

Do i really need to buy another PSU? Thanks in advance.

Well, it exploded lol. It made a sound like it was frying potatoes, but very loud.

Fortunately nothing else went with it.

So i got myself a Corsair GS700.

If anyone with the same question about this matter, reads this thread, do NOT go ahead with it, specially if you overclock. This is most likely going to happen.

what brand was it and what rating? 400w?

If it was a crappy brand, then they never give u the full power rated on the box, you'd be looking at up to 50% less depending also on age.

Well it was a cheap one, but reviews said it was indeed 550W, problem is that 570 needs at least 38A and mine had 34A, maybe overvoltage as it only happened after i overclocked my CPU.

LC Power LC6550 or something like that lol.

What exactly was your PSU?

My current one isn't exactly a good PSU as well. In a sense that it isn't a good 600W PSU, but a good enough 550W PSU, even though it's supposedly 600W. So unless it's a generic/el cheapo or an worse PSU than mine...

What were you thinking overclocking the card when it didn't have enough amperage at stock? I could have told you this would happen. Did the PSU only die, or the 570 also?

Well you asked for it. First not enough amps for the 570, second, the C2Q is overclocked in the machine and third tried to overclock the GPU also? You're lucky if everything is still intact.

No i just overclocked the CPU, sorry if i made you understand it wrong. :laugh:

I think the main problem here is the fact that the PSU in question isn't even capable of providing 34A on the 12v rail. It has two rails that can provide 16A and 18A, but you can't just add those two numbers together and get the maximum the power supply can handle. The specs on the PSU state that it can only provide a total of 282w from the 12v rails combined. This means the PSU is really only capable of 24A! :eek:

And since this is a generic PSU, chances are even that 24A is overrated.:shadedshu

A quality PSU should also have decent current and voltage regulation along with short circuit protection.
Cheap PSUs have no protection in place in case the system tries to draw more current than what it's rated at. So those 12v lines would have been trying to draw the full required current casuing the components inside to blow. It's lucky it didn't take out the GPU.

A decent PSU would only try to provide the maximum rated current, once it hits that mark it doesn't try to draw more.
