Hello, so I got 8GB of memory in total.
On my old motherboard, I could only use the 8GB. but suddenly it failed to start.
Everytime a ram module was in slot 3 or 4 the screen just stayed black. All modules work fine in the first 2 slots.
So I got a new motherboard..But the issue is still there!
First 2 ram slots work, soon as I put anything in the 3 or4'th. It fails. Screen just stays black, as in no signal..
What could cause this??

have you properly set up your ram in your BIOS? manually set all timings and voltages, as specified on the ram sticks?

Tried that. I don't know much about memory timing and stuff tho.

I remember that when using am2+ and DDR2 memory setup, only 2 RAM slots were useable, (preferably first 2 on ASUS Boards). If using 4 slots, you must lower RAM frequency to 800MHz because of CPU integrated memory controller.

I don't know if that's the case with AM3 and DDR3.

It worked earlier. So it probably ain'tthat.

If it ain't the motherboard, not the ram itself, Maybe it is the CPU?

then thats likely the problem. its written on the label on the ram what it needs to be set to, read your mobo manual/google it, until you can figure out how to set it up.

Yeah.. But it always worked at default bios.

for two sticks it has. doesnt mean its default settings are any good for four.

motherboards automatic settings vary between the pairs of slots, for extra compatibility with various types of ram. each pair is a different channel of the memory controller - two channels for dual channel, two pairs.



i'm not guessing on this one, i've seen it dozens of times. my last few intel systems on socket 775 were horrible for it, every time i reset the BIOS i had to take out two sticks of ram to get it to boot to load my saved profiles.

please specify what settings you changed, and what voltages did you adjust to what new settings.

No, I havent tested them. Only tried them one by one to see if the PC starts.

As for what voltage i used.
The NB voltage was at 1.60.
Memory timing was at 7-10-7. And many other options I didn't dare to change.

I had the same issues with a set of DDR2 once, all would boot the PC individually but would crash when all in the motherboard together. Ended up being on of the sticks was bad so RMA fixed that.

Yes, but none of them work in slot 3 or 4

I just got a new one.. Today. I though the motherboard was the issue too, at first atleast.
But it ain't the mobo.

Bios should recognise the memory stick as a hard drive,so set the usb as primary for the tests.
Though its pretty much a given it's the IMC,as both motherboards suffering the same problem is unlikely.
Is your ram on the QVL list?
Are they matched sticks?
I'd say drop the divider and try slackening the timings a little,and up the cpu-nb volts and mobo nb volts a little

No, i got 2 memory types. 2 x 2.
Its just that they used to work perfectly fine.. So I really got no clue to why it causes a issue.
I did try and increase the nb volt before, without luck

Also, whats is IMC?

Its currently doing the memtest. I am going to try them 1 by 1
First memory module failed pretty bad.. Im not sure what info is needed.
But error says, 160. Pass 0
Also there is alot of red text which I don't know what means, something with failing address.

IMC is the integrated memory controller,or the processors integrated northbridge(cpu-nb)
I try to stay away from confusion so if the IMC and mobo NB voltage increases are mentioned,
then one wont be increasing the mobo nb voltage thinking its the IMC/cpu-nb

As you say it did used to work and now doesn't (wether thats at the settings you put in,or in general)
too much voltage can damage the IMC.

When you say 2 memory types,could you do a cpu-z of one of the pairs and the other?
what happens if you have one of one pair and one of the other pair installed ,just 4gb of course but do the timings and voltages match in the SPD?

so one has failed,i guess it would be sensible to run the other 3 to be sure whats good and what isnt.
