Hi

I currently have a 4890 2GB GPU. I am looking to update. I have a bout £350 absolute maximum, But really dont want to spend that much. I have done some research on some reviews and i get the impression that the 570 and 6970 are pretty buch the same apart from 6970 price is slightly cheaper. But what about the 580? I want to be playing games like Battlefield 3 on 1920x1080 and batman arkham city. I have been playing call of juarez the cartel and dead island on 1920x1080 and i do suffer from frame drop. Quite bad on call of juarez tbh. Can anyone please share there opinions on which GPU i should choose?

The 570 or 6970 are enough actually. Your choice would then depend on which card company is favored by the games you play.

I would say HD6970 or 570. 580 is much more expensive for only a 7-10% gain in performance. I would simply choose the 6970 or 570 with the best cooler and highest clocks in your price range.

Thank you entropy13 and drunkenmafia. 850 Watt should be fine for 6970 and 570? The 850watt PSU is my bros old PSU. He had this 4890 2GB which he gave to me, Then He brought a 6970 and his 850 PSU kept crashing. He took his computer to a local very good and honest computer company who told him that the 850PSU was causing the problem. Now he went and brought a 1200 Watt PSU and it now works fine. He as I7 and 12GB Ram. So if I brought the 6970 Do you think that i would have the same problem he had? I would hate to have to buy a new PSU when i believe the 850 corsiar PSU should be enough! Thanks again for the quick replies :)

@ Outback bronze. I am getting maybe a bit too frisky. But i suppose i could wait. How long until 7 series? I read somewhere maybe earlier 2012? I think that maybe too long as my card will blow up i reckon if i try battlefield 3 @ 1920x1080?
What about this?

or

or even this? I know its the 6950 but is it really that far behind 570 and 6970 to justify £70-£100 more?

yeah those 3rd party 570s are good enough. You wont see much difference with your bare eyes with 580. Its no night and day difference.

If your HX850 couldn't handle a 6970 then there is probably something wrong with it. Corsair have 5yrs warranty on the HX series. HX850 should be able to run 2 6970's no problem.

I had the same dilemma recently. Upgraded from an HD5850 (which is roughly the same power as the 4890) and was looking at the gtx 570,580 & 6950/6970. I chose to go for the GTX 580 only because its the fastest single gpu solution and you can get one for your mentioned budget. (also the CUDA is usefull for my video editing in adobe premiere)

Sure you could arguably get two 6950's for the price but crossfire dosent work in all games and most new titles are buggy with multi gpu setups till profiles and updates are made... I wanted a no bullshit solution.

You dont want to spend all this money only to look back and think what could have been ;)
I've often done upgrades where Ive saved a couple of pounds on something lesser only to regret it later when im in a game wondering if id get smoother 1080p gameplay if only id gone one up!

And ontop of all of it, ive always bought ATI cards as they are considerably cheaper, this gtx 580 is great and maxxes everything 1080p (except Metro 2033 on ultra settings). Really cool running and exceptionally quiet, I can highly reccomend the Asus cards with their Direct CUII coolers!

gotta agree with most posts in this thread, a non reference GTX570 is the best way to go.

Asus GTX570 DCII

MSI TwinFrozr GTX570

Gigabyte Ultra Durable GTX570 Windforce 3x

all excellent choices.

Ok i am pretty sure i will go for the 570. Is it worth going for extra memory version of 570
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-150-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1010

And just a quicky. I know i said im going to get 570 but is the 6950 2gb really that far behind. As its £70 - £100 cheaper. I can get £350 but ideally i dont want to spend that much. And like some of you have said for the extra £100 the 580 is not that much better. I gota be honest i really like the look of this 6950?

No, definitely not worth it at that price, AND with that cooler.

This is the only HD 6950 I'd consider: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-274-SP&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

But then again, look at its price. Barely £30 cheaper.

Thanks entropy13. Fair enough. By the way i am not interested in overclocking. Its something i have never really done. Whats the difference really between the HIS and the SAPPHIRE, Wasnt aware that the manufacture played much of a part.

Higher factory overclocking, and there are certain features that Sapphire includes that HIS doesn't. The alternative BIOS from the Toxic is for a HD 6970, so you can do some shader unlocking, besides further overclocking, and voltage tuning. But at that price it's like buying an actual HD 6970 already. lol

Go with the GTX 570 Twin Frozr III Power Edition OC.
