Shinanokenshi (the parent company of Plextor) has decided to exit the market for consumer CD and DVD products. The Plextor brand name will remain for industry use products and digital playback units for the visually impaired. Shinanokenshi has announced that their optical drive operations will be reduced to 10% of its peak capacity. These actions will also lead to reduced workforce at Shinanokenshi. Shinanokenshi cites increased competition from Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers, increased pricing competition and slumping profit margins as reasons for exiting the ODD (Optical Disk Drive) business. Plextor has informed that there will be no more shipments of the latest PX-755A and PX-760A DVD burners. The drives should still be available in some retail stores, but once they sell out, they're gone.

Wow! That's a major bummer. The made great drives and often pushed performance higher in the industry, forcing others to follow suit. Looks as though they priced themselves out of the market tho.

FWIW, I found Plextors SCSI CD drives to be excellent but their ATAPI drives to be just average in performance - and yes they were premium priced for sure. I don't mind paying a premium if I'm getting the claimed performance but the Plextor ATAPI based CD drives never excelled for me.

Been using the Plextor PX-740A for the last year, I paid extra as I'd heard of their quality, but to be honest it's been nothing special then it packed up last week. replaced it with a second hand NEC for now.

lmao "Shinanokenshi"

It might mean something that we don't know, that's why you think it's funny.

lmao "Casheti"...j/k

But anyways, too bad the Plextor left the market.

Not really a loss in my eyes. Their drives were just needlessly overpriced and you got nothing for it. There were often faster burners on the market, made by just as reputable companies, for a third of the price.

Kind of sad, but I never owned a plextor. I know they have the cd/dvd destroying thing and a couple of top notch performances, but when you can get an 18X DVD Burner, DUal Layer with lightscribe for like 35 bucks with shipping, Im there!
