Sony is making data storage and backup easier, safer and more enjoyable with its latest range of external hard drives. The new HD-EG5 and HD-EG5U offer advanced features in a slim, stylish package that enable users to save and access their data quickly and conveniently, wherever they go.

The new drives with 500GB capacity provide USB3.0 compatibility and use pre-loaded Data Transfer Accelerator software to increase transfer speeds up to three times as compared to data transmission without the software. When connected to a USB2.0 port, the software boosts transfer speeds up to two times. These features make them one of the quickest 2.5-inch hard drives in the market.

Osamu Miura, Managing Director, Sony Gulf, said, "With the launch of its first-ever series of external hard drives, Sony has taken the lead by providing the fastest, most secure, and easy-to-use product in the consumer storage market. Sony has always focused on delivering technology solutions that make life more enjoyable and the new HD-EG5 and HD-EG5U are a testament to this commitment."

The Password Protection Manager software makes it easy to lock all or part of the drive using advanced AES 256-bit encryption, allowing only password-holders to access the protected data. Meanwhile, Backup Manager makes it a cinch to set up automatic back-ups on any PC, and saves time by intelligently recognizing and backing up only data that has been added or modified. FAT32 formatter software is also included to sync the drives with FAT32 compatible hardware.

Users of Sony Handycam camcorders can link the AV Link function of the HD-EG5U to make playback of AVCHD video on a PlayStation 3 quick and hassle-free. For this, the drive must be connected to the Handycam with the supplied USB adapter cable and the video copied. The drive would then have to be hooked to PlayStation 3 with a USB cable to view the videos using Sony's Filmy software and without the need of a PC.

Sony's first ever external hard drives are available in a black, silver or pink case that weighs 220 g. The hard drives are currently available.

Interesting.... Its like Asus's speedy transfer program to transfer files faster across the network - cant remember whats it called.

ANYHOO

as cool and interesting as the feature sounds. data transfer is only as fast as the hard drive they put inside, my 2.5" 7200rpm Scorpio Blacks get around 90MB/read where as an older 80Gb random Fujitsu HDD which im guessing is 5400rpm only gets around 30-35MB/s. Im not sure if it would make it any faster if you plugged it in to a USB 3.0

No not yet, not really interested in breaking the seals over the screws and get my warranty void...

bleh. I bought a $15 2.5" caddy and put my own hard drive in it not long ago.

you could even do the same with a 3.5" $60 for the samsung 1TB F3 or $53 for the 500GB version.

Id only buy a unit from a proper brand if it was going real dirt cheap, otherwise i'll stick to making my own externals

Its a 2.5 unit, i could've done the same, but wouldn't feet my pocket plus power supply and the reason i bought it was because the 750GB unit was cheaper than some 320GB ones, got me a nice promotion there and still got discount on transportation case...

Doesnt 2.5" caddys usually draw power through the same USB cable??? -- Its kinda like a 'Y' cable of sorts - 2male USB connectors at the top (1 for power and the other for data) and a male USB at the other end which connects to your extenal device.

thats how my 2.5" caddy works and most of those that ive encountered anyway. very rarely will i come across a 2.5" caddy that requires you lug a power brick around

Hey, i though you where talking about those 3.5 drives...
It would still be more expensive, i had been looking at all that stuff, but just couldn't resist the price...
Mine has the same usb3 cable, but a single plug does the job, there's no need to plug both, just in case the mobo cant handle...
Been running crystal mark, it presents better results than my wd green for ex...

$60 for a 2.5" 320Gb Scorpio Black - $10-15 for a cheap 2.5" external. (UK prices converted into USD) Im sure you guys will be able to get this stuff cheaper. How much was your 750Gb?
