What should I get to go on my Asrock 890gx Pro3 board? The AMD FX 4100 or the Phenom 965. I have a AMD 6870 and 8gb 1600mhz ddr3 memory. I make beats using fl studio and i game too, driving, shooters etc. What would be the best choice?

If you're running your current Phenom II processor at 3.8ghz, there will be no difference going to the PII 965 since it's essentially the same chip. Either of those chips have about the same or better performance than the FX 4100.

My setup in my signature is no more. So a 955 will do just fine then with some overclock.

I'm running one stock and I'm only complaining a little bit. I'll be OCing it someday soon though.

+1 to above posts, the FX4100 is IMO close enough to a waste of silicon.

FX-4100 is priced right; but it's performance disappointing

have your read this report ?

AMD has under-priced the FX-4100

they know it is underperformer (i.e dog)

but price is right for quad-core normal-user, or a "budget-gamer"

No offense, but that 'report' isn't particularly good. It sounds very intelligent, but it's flawed.
The only thing that is good about the FX-4100 in comparison to any Phenom II x4 is its memory controller.

Could you overclock the 4100 to something faster than the Phenom II?
Yes, but you'd be over 4.3Ghz and so suffer from very high power consumption in comparison to the Phenom II -- not worth it. Any overclock above 4.3 Ghz on the Bulldozer CPUs devours electrical power, and you'd have to push it over 4.3 to make it perform better than the Phenom II.
By my estimate, you would have to push the 4100 to 4.3+ to equal the single threaded performance of a Phenom II at 4 Ghz, but your multithreaded performance would be lower by ~10-20%.

To the OP, go with the Phenom II, you'll get better performance, for gaming, in a more manageable power envelope, even with 4 Ghz+ overclocks
