I want to know if there is a decent board that supports bothy DDR and DDR2. I have some platinum OCZ 3200 that I want to use until I can afford a couple of gigs of good DDR800 or 1066. I've come across good deals on a 4000+ and an 830D. I havn't decided yet on AMD or Intel for the build.

Well it does exist and it seems like a good mobo. look here

It's for socket 775, performance is comparable between ddr and ddr2

this board also support agp and pcie

the weakest point: overclocking

it depends what you plan to do with your rig...

AsRock 775Dual-VSTA. It supports both DDR1 and DDR2 and also AGP 8x + PCI-E. It's cheap too. Two downsides though; it's not overclocker friendly (normally tops out at 300MHz FSB and has no CPU voltage adjustment) and the PCI-E slot is only 4x electrically (does not support 8800 series). Very nice interim board though :)

EDIT: Damn, Tonyjack beat me to it ;)

the board i have (asrock 939dual sata2) has an expansion slot that a daughterboard for am2(&ddr2) plugs into, bit of a messy solution though, i wont bother

I sold a lot of this motherboards, and they have problems with a lot of pciex video cards, please read the manual of this motherboard first, http://download.asrock.com/manual/775Dual-VSTA.pdf

Too bad the P4M800 Pro-M has AGP.

I did come across the ECS P4M890T-M2 (V1.0B) board that has PCIE instead and it does support Core 2 Duo. Just DDR2-533 though, not 800. Anyone have experience with this board?

Looks bleak.:ohwell: I think my only real options, if I want to get the most out of the cpu, is to limit myself to the 939 boards or to buy a cheap stick of 533 for now.

So what's the best, fairly inexpensive, boards for; 939, AM2 and 775 sockets?

socket 939 and AM2 boards are around the same price, plus AMD processors dont need high spec RAM to amazing performance out of them. there are lots of benchmarks out there showing that AMD's DDR and DDR2 performances are near enough equal, but to further proof yourself a little go for the AM2 board. at least there is head room you upgrade. plus you could sell your old stuff on ebay to fund new stuff.

incredibly stable and feature packed for a "value" board.
