6770 causing crashes w/ catalyst 11.10, was fine with 11.9

I saw that Catalyst 11.10 was out, so I downloaded and installed it. (upgrading from Catalyst 11.9) Now, everytime the card is taxxed, the computer crashes. Black screen. nothing. very sad.

The first couple of times, I wasn't sure if it was CPU or GPU, so I lowered my CPU clock to 3.8 which is very stable for me. Then I tested it again, (Using Cinebench) and it crashed. So I lowered the GPU clocks, to the lowest they will go in CCatalyst, and it runs fine. But it wont run at the clocks it did with Catalyst 11.9


Any help will be appreciated, Thanks.

I uninstalled it and deleted anything ATI I could find, then DL'd 11.10 again and installed it, and now it wont run at a higher setting than 800 GPU clock and 1375 memory clock. Before I had it at 960x1445, (max setting) but now it bluescreens at anything higher than 800x1375.

BSOD said something like 'attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.' (Might've been worded differently)


Should I just uninstall and get 11.9 again, or is this a totally new problem tthat nobody else has had with 11.10?

Thats what I did eventually. After trying to get 11.10 to work at least 4 times. 11.9 w/ CAP4 works fine. I guess as long as it works its good.

I'm not sure what the deal was with mine. I went back to 11.9 (after several uninstalls and reinstalls of 11.10) and that seems to have fixed it.

I see you have Crossfire though, do you have the CAP4 update? Its supposed to fix issues with crossfire and 11.10.

Also, did you uninstall 11.9 before you installed 11.10? (I found out that this can cause troubles) If you want to uninstall and try again, the guide that Dark2099 posted earlier is really useful. Be sure to use driver sweeper too if you do.

Okay. I can't find the thread, but a few guys on here were saying that you still need CAP4 with 11.10.

with mine and 11.10 i experienced problems with youtube sometimes flashing green frames aswell

Mine is doing that presently. And with old games like NFS Undercover I'm only getting like 50 FPS and lower. It was perfect before I tryed to install 11.10, and now I cant hardly do anything without it crashing. This is really getting to be annoying.

Did you get yours to work?

well the games i tested, Fallout New Vegas, and Mafia II...

Fallout New Vegas was crashing after some time of moving around consistently, and Mafia II had some severe lag in some missions on Joe's Adventures toward the last 92% such as in the Cathouse...


all i can say is sofar Fallout New Vegas hasn't crashed again with 11.9/CAP4, and i haven't tested the cathouse level in Mafia again, yet... Flash seems to be working like before but that was with very limited use since the install of 11.9/cap4 after the 10.11 "debacle"



my method was to simply run an express unstall all from the AMD Catalyst Install/Uninstall Manager or whatever in the Windows Control Panel uninstall/install program features or whatever...

after that i installed 11.9 then cap4


hopefully i will have more for you later

That sounds like exactly what I did, but from 11.9. Can you get it to work with just one card? Because mine was going black on CCC startup too. But I uninstalled it completely, manually clearing everything I could find including registry entries then ran driversweeper. then reinstalled it. And then I could open CCC, but the screen was flashing. and I barely managed to open the 'performance' tab and click on 'defaults.' And then the flashing stopped, and its working fine, even under full load no issues. But i can't raise the GPU clock speed or the memory clock speed without it crashing.

I had CAP4 installed.

I noticed the one thing all of us in this thread have in common is 6X70 cards. Mines a 6770, and yours is 6970, and the other fellow was 6870.


Edit: I was reading through the Catalyst 11.10 release notes from ATI and it says that it wont work properly unless SP1 is installed on Vista and 7. Also, 67XX series cards were not listed in the compatability section...not sure why. (I have 6770) It also said to download the driver and install manager together.

So I'm gonna install SP1 and then reinstall 11.10. then if it doesn't work, I'll go back to 11.9 and hope that it works a little bit. If then it is is the same, I will find a WMD and detonate in my case. Specifically in the graphics card area. Or I could sell it and buy something else...but that woudn't be very exciting.

Right now it crashes if I raise the speeds much in CCC.

Haha, I ended up sending in my card for a RMA cause I have no more idea on what else could go wrong. The CCC would hang the moment I open it, causing black screen/BSOD.

I think the Catalyst 11.10 made it broken, never had this issue before.

Luckily, the other card is working fine; the one which I had connected the display output into.

Wonder what went wrong, I hate the RMA waiting times.

I installed SP1 on 7 and it seems to have helped, but I still cant run at maximum clocks. I say never do a driver reinstall ever.
