Hey guys...need some help on an old system

My buddy just got a PC from his sister...CANT UPGRADE , NOT POSSIBLE...need to know if this is fixable or not..

problem:

When i push the on button the fans spin for less then 4 sec and shutdown...no beeping ...no screen flash...NOTHING happens...

what i did:

Took PSU out of system...jumped the PSU(touched the green wire to the black wire) and THEN it works fine used the HDD and CD ROM to test it... then i took ever part out of PC, including the battery and RESET the CMOS..and hooked just the PSU,HARD-DRIVE,CD,MONITOR all together and the fans run and PC seems to be on..

BUT

When i connect the rest of the PSU to the mother board...BLACK/YELLOW cords(four pin, possible ground???)...the system shutdowns down and does what the ORIGINAL problem was.

so is this mean

PSU bad??

or the motherboard bad???

or em i doing something wrong?

thanks guys..

system specs:

Compaq Presario SR1210NX
330 Intel Celeron D Processor 2.66ghz
256MB DDR SDRAM(yes i know need upgrade)
80gb
CdRW/DvD rom

hook up a spare PSU to the rig and see if it boots. The PSU may have a load issue that the motherboard trips that fans and drive power doesn't hit.

If then it doesnt boot, you know you are bown to board or proc.

Knowing those units I would go with bad Board, but if you can test another PSU that I would try first.

Do you mean "too long"? IE your psu has a 24 pin ATX power connector? If so... most are 20+4 if not, you can pick up adapters cheap.

If you do not have a 4pin CPU. It might fit anyway if the area around is clear, if not you can also buy an adapter cheap.

IE by cheap I mean $10 shipped for both... However you can probably get another PSU for that make and model for that price.

Oh

just thought of another issue common on that series...

dont connect the front pin headers.

Plug everything up like normal but do not connect the power button. Jump the on/off pins witha flat head screw driver. once it starts remove the screwd river.

Might be a bad button getting stuck on (4 seconds is the on/off cycles of power on power off)

Modern systems buttons fail and just dont work, old cheap systems seem to get stuck in on/off)

Its most probably a short on the motherboard and has nothing to do with the PSU.
Try placing the motherboard on a non conductive surface, and install just the RAM, processor and the video card.

If that doesn't work, then you won't be able to repair it. You will need a professional to do it.

so must be motherboard correct?? if so......

....now remember this would mean PC is garbage...so don't laugh...anyway to fix this?? i have solder tools and heat gun :p yes im serious.
only reason i dare to ask is because i do PS3 and XboX"s hahahahahaha

Lol. Ok. I didn't laugh. You can't do this mate.

But you can inspect for some anomalies. Look at the capacitors. Look for any leaks or any swollen caps. Also try heating the motherboard in an oven to melt all joints and redo them.

If that doesn't work, then its all toast. But I'm sure you can get a better mobo+cpu+ram for under $50. Welcome to 21st century :toast:

when this happens it means the system POST'ed far enough to power on, detect an error and power off.

theoretically, this could mean any of the critical components - motherboard, CPU, ram, or video card.

are you giving it time to see if it powers up a second time after powering off? some intel systems do that after a 5 second wait or so.

Only recently but yes, to all the other stuff.

Why not bake it. (as long as you did everything else)

2 minute is not enough cap rebaking is a 5minute at 150 degree process.
