Suggest a new graphics card

Hey All,

Please suggest a new graphics card for my rig.

The options are

1. GTX550 Ti
2. ATI 5750
3. ATI 6770
4. ATI 6790

I don't wanna play all games on Ultra settings, High is enough for me. And the resolution is 1920x1080.

6790 if you can afford. or the 550Ti as it has a higher pixel fill rate and since you are using it on high res.

Here is aus u can get a 6850 for $149. That might suit his budget. Best card i can see 4 the price. Sorry if i threw out your train of thought.

Depending on budget try to at least get a HD6850 / GTX460 (560).

Both will be ALOT better than any of the cards listed in the OP and shouldn't cost alot more.

Budget is USD 190USD. But HD6790 is for 175 USD here in Pakistan.

I haven't played BF3 so I'm not sure. The recommended specs for it say "NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 or ATI RADEON 6950" but you can probably do fine with less.

Right, I didn't bother with min, since OP doesn't want to play on minimum settings I understand and agree with your point though about recommended specs usually being higher than needed.

Why are nv drivers supposed to be better? In Windows I have never noticed a difference (though it might be there, only somewhat hard to notice if not directly comparing hardware-wise equal cards); and in Linux the AMD drivers (the propietary drivers, not the OSS equivalents) seem to be much easier to install & get working, if one does not use a package manager but installs the driver manually instead. Though the latter could be a lack of skill in my case, yet the fact that AMD display drivers are less work still stands.

@inf3n0: the 6790 might be a better choice than the 6770 in the long run at your resolution. The GTX550ti is a few fps faster than the 6790 AFAIK, but consumes more power when put to work: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_550_Ti_Direct_Cu/21.html. If you are happy enough with the AMD drivers you should go for the 6790, IMHO.

From Experience with ATI vs NV ive had no troubles with Catalyst Drivers since after Catalyst 4.2. NV on the otherhand was causing headaches and that was with everything else current. Now just to say one thing, It would be advisable to upgrade the driver 7- 8 months after installing for first time.

TBH, I haven't used an ATI/AMD card in a while, so I based that off the complaints I see/hear about them. Hence why I said "seem to be" rather than "are".

If OP has not problems with the current drivers, then it's probably more convenient to stick with ATI/AMD so they don't have to install new drivers.

Just to clarify the Battlefield 3 Recommended settings mention an HD6950 and I know that the 2 GB version is capable of running Battlefield 3 on Ultra for a good 30-40 FPS so using High I would definitely say that the majority of your choices should be capable of playing BF3 on High with virtually no trouble if the rest of your system can keep up.
