Damn, getting close to Jan. 9. After reading about sapphire's leaked specs for their upcoming non-reference card, Asus comes up with an overclocking feat featuring (yet again) an HD7970. This card really is an overclocking beast. The 28nm process really is going to make this card so competitive (My HD 5850 is gonna get replaced by one of these!). Anyways, can wait for Jan.9 and also Happy New Year to all TPU'ers out there. Here's the link for those who are interested http://www.legitreviews.com/news/12109/ :toast:

Makes me wonder if I'm going to buy a reference card or wait for the higher clocked ones. Starting to think that Amd limited the stock clocks in preparation for Nvidia's high end Kepler. When Kepler arrives Amd and its partners will release cards with clocks maybe 1.3ghz and up even. Given the high overclocks attainable with the reference card without voltage tweaking, these stupendous speeds are achievable (given sufficient cooling). Hopefully those cards that has those clocks won't be cherry picked.

Well that is implying that the also 28nm Kepler couldn't also reach high clocks to beat the 7970.

Nice job on the silicon, TSMC! Seems like the process has improved.

Considering the 1335 MHz Sapphire card rumour, this is killer. That's nearly 400 MHz over the "launch" cards. I think the last gen was around 1500 MHz on LN2? A 200 MHz bump under cold is pretty good.

Is there any sources you can pull for the rumor of 1300+mhz cards?

According to Legitreviews the HD7950 would be released on Feb. instead of Jan. 9. :(
I was hoping to get the HD7950 because you'll never know it may be unlockable just like the HD6950. That one would be a really sweet deal considering the performance increase you'll be getting. Well, wishful thinking I guess for now.

I think this means don't pay extra for factory oc'd versions, as you know they are oc'ing beasts. I wonder if any randomly picked 7970 card will oc the same as this on LN2?

Well, LN2 overclock score is pointless for a average user. Even watercooling is pretty rare for gaming. Sad but true, full-cover water block + good water loop is too darn expensive for average Joe. So we are back to overclocking with stock cooling and that always sucks, man - no mater what. There is no such thing as stable overclock with stock cooling. If there is - it will be 50MHz as always was, not big enough to worth mentioning.

Not only too expensive, but a lot of hassle. I had a decent water loop and all that stuff, including the case, is now in the garage gathering dust. It's just too damn much work. I like to play games, not spend my time under my desk tinkering around with the water loop and whatnot. I'm sure there are others like me.

Well, if you got the money full cover waterblock and 3x120mm radiator is the right way to overclock a GPU. Air coolers just don't cut. It doesn't matter how many heat pipes they have. They simply can't remove +200Watt heat fast enough . I have Accelero S1 and 2x120mm fans on my HD5870. It seams a great improvement over stock cooling, but actually that don't give me even 10MHz more overclock , than stock .

The stock cooling on the 5870's is not all that bad. Very loud when turned up but they do remove the heat rather well..

It turns out, that when you rump up the speed to 40-50% and above, fan bearings fails quickly. It is some chippo NTK fan, model FD9238H12S. Air cooling lacks the needed thermal capacity to accommodate sudden spikes in GPU activity, when it is operating at high load. Simply when the radiator is heated up it stops being responsive enough, where thermal capacity of a water loop is enormous. On air you can have moderate GPU temperature at 50C and in a split second - FPS spike, overheating and BSOD.

I disagree I have a cooler with 5 large heat-pipes and a very dense fin array and not only can I over-clock a lot more I can also run a lot more voltage through whilst keeping temperatures way below spec.

My last 6870 could do 1ghz @ 1.3v on stock, it could do 1.1ghz same voltage with upgraded cooling or it could do 1ghz on the stock 1.175v :toast:

That's a fair ole difference, especially the voltage requirement.

This 6870 unfortunately is not as good an over clocker though : [

If you don't get much more of an over-clock with your upgraded cooling perhaps you should try lowering the voltage instead.

every one of my cards have overclocked well, some like my 5870 that can reach 1.1Ghz at 1.4 volts and still run cool, and some like my X800GTO that has a custom BIOS.
