Google: Let There Be Light

Google is finally starting to install their proposed 1 Gbps Fiber Optic network in Kansas City, Kansas this week. In a Blog Post on Monday they detailed what exactly they were up to. Google is promising to offer Fiber Optic services with download speeds reaching 1 Gbps, which is about 100 times faster than current broadband offerings in the area. This in itself is impressive, but not quite as impressive as their plan to offer upload speeds up to 1 Gbps, which is about 1000 times faster than currently available. Google had run into some snags with local utility companies over the positioning on utility poles of their cables, but the issue has since been resolved.

This is pretty cool stuff, especially considering the terrible connection available in the States to begin with. Interested to see if they will extend the service, and pricing as well. Hopefully it's not an arm and a leg.

Won't you need Sata 6gb/s SSD's in RAID 0 to utilize that bandwith? .. Or would that be 100 megabytes per second?

It would be 1000 megabits divided by 8, resulting in 125 megabytes a second.

Impressive, the max upload speed you get in Canada (I think) is 2Mbps, and that's for $100 a month.

How so? Internet Connections are generally measured in Bits Per Second, not Bytes Per Second. 1 GB/s would be the only alternative and that is definitely incorrect. The original article and Google Blog post cited 1 Gbps (1 Gigabit per second) as the desired speed, so I wrote that.

I actually misread that portion and didn't realize it was referring to upload speeds at that point. My mistake.

if you've never been to kansas city you wont know about this but...

kansas city is on the border of kansas and missouri.

kansas city missouri is where the majority of the city is and the nicer part of town(if that can even be said about this place)

kansas city kansas however is ghetto as fuck

you know when people tell you not to go to "that part of town"? well kansas city kansas is THAT part of town.

my point is... why the fuck would google choose the ghetto to start providing their services in?

I thought it was the other way around honestly. I've been to Kansas City, Kansas and it didn't seem too bad. I remember Google held a competition seeing who would be interested, and I believe Kansas City, KA won by renaming the town to Google for a day or week or something. I wanted Burlington to win so bad since we haven't had any real form of improved service since 2001 when my parents got our first computer. DSL has gotten substantially worse since Fairpoint got ahold of Verizon's old network, and when Comcast swallowed Adelphia they pretty much just matched the basic Comcast pricing\speed tiers.

There's also the fun fact that something like half the state doesn't have acccess to real high-speed internet services... :shadedshu

kansas city has time warner and they fought really hard to keep google away to keep their monopoly.

kansas city kansas, the far far west part, has the nascar track, legends(a ritzy outdoor mall), schlitterbahn(a good waterpark thats only open 3 months a year), a soccer complex and a recently opened casino.

so i guess they may be doing it for the money.
