The Pirate Bay completed a huge transition from being a host of .torrent files to a host for magnet:// links. The people behind the site believe the move was essential to make Pirate Bay "future proof". For instance, when replaced with magnet:// links, the entire site can be squeezed into a 90 MB "portable site" archive, which can be used to play chicken with the authorities. "It (the transition) shouldn't make much of a difference for the average user. At most it will take a few more seconds before a torrent shows the size and files," The Pirate Bay team told TorrentFreak today. "Just click the red button instead of the green one and all will be fine," it added. Magnet links, instead of sites hosting .torrent files, make the bit-torrent system vastly more decentralized. Those with the looming question of "Magnets...how do they work?" can refer to this article by Wikipedia.

have to admit, i am one big dummy and still dont get how tracker-less torrenting can work. How can you find DHT nodes out of nowhere? Randomly spamming all valid IPv4 addresses?

the only issue which remain unsolved as i see is the ability to resolve IP's from where you download so u can get caught the same way as with torr.;is enough for an agency to download and seed their own material and they can trace you the same way

because there are known nodes to begin with, contained in the magnet links. which then spread as you connect to more peers/seeds.

I honestly don't understand why it took them so long, it's so much easier to just click the link and your PC just starts downloading.

So how can I select only certain files of the torrent? Is it impossible since you cant see whats in the torrent before you start downloading it?

utorrent has always allowed control of that. this isnt really the place to be discussing it however.

Ooops sorry, I didn't know you could choose parts of the file within a magnet link with utorrent, and still dont know after 30 minutes of googling about it. Seems you know a lot about something I and others dont, we keep seeing a blank torrent. But like you said its not the place to talk about magnet links. I will keep searching elsewhere.

The Pirate Bay Considers Launching Airborne Server Drones

After years of being chased by governments on land, The Pirate Bay is considering putting proxy servers in the sky.

No, really.

The Pirate Bay's MrSpock writes in a Pirate Bay blog post that the popular BitTorrent site will experiment with small airborne drones that will redirect user traffic to a secret location. The drones will use cheap radio equipment and small computers (such as Raspberry Pi), and will be controlled by GPS.

"This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war," MrSpock writes.

The Pirate Bay figures that modern radio transmitters can transfer more than 100Mbps at over 50 kilometers away, which will be more than enough for a proxy system. "We're just starting so we haven't figured everything out yet. But we can't limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore," the blog post says.

The announcement has drawn some skepticism from the hacker community. As one commenter at Hacker News notes, broadcasting from the sky would likely violate existing laws in many countries--including zoning laws if the drones are tethered to the ground--so they'd still be subject to legal challenges.

However, The Pirate Bay tells Torrentfreak that the first drone will probably fly above international waters. For good measure, The Pirate Bay reiterated to TorrentFreak that its plan to launch airborne server drones is real.

In any case, The Pirate Bay has good reason to go on the run. Last month, the site switched its top-level domain, possibly to avoid seizure by U.S. authorities. Last October, the site set up a new domain to get around ISP blocking in Belgium. And in 2010, The Pirate Bay suffered some temporary downtime when a court injunction in Germany pressured the site's bandwidth provider to bail out.

If The Pirate Bay manages to pull off its high-flying server stunt, it's sure to frustrate the entertainment industry, which has been trying for years to thwart the site. Although The Pirate Bay's founders now face prison time and steep fines for violating Swedish copyright laws, the site continues to thrive. According to TorrentFreak, The Pirate Bay is the most popular BitTorrent site on the Internet, with close to 2 billion page views per month.
