880 vs 990 for amd

hello

i got a gigabyte 880g usb3 am3 socket motherboard
a 1090t amd phenom II in it
gskill sniper 16 gb 1600 @ 1333 mhz

i was thinking of buying a 990x am3+ mobo not only to replace my current mobo but for future piledriver chips as amd claims 2nd and 3rd generation piledriver and steamroller respectively shall be supported by this socket natively-- well maybe as far as i know.

i wont be giving away my current mobo as it is a real workhorse and will give it to my sis with the 1090t (who is currently using an pentium x2 e6600 with 8gb ddr3 and amd 5450) once piledriver comes out.

Also read that the new unreleased amd northbridge nb1090 isnt something radical but rather a minor upgrade with 8 sata 3 and more usb 3 ports.

Now my question is shall i buy the gigabyte 990XA-ud3 which has 6 sata3 and 32 gb ddr3 support unlike mine which doesnt OR should i wait till something appropriate comes out that is piledriver specific....

Now my real quest is whether i will benefit in anyway even if i upgrade my current mobo from 880gm to 990xa....meaning whether transactions and performance is better than the 880 mobo(northbridge and southbridge).....

:confused::banghead::slap:

thank you.

There are a few minor benefits to 900 series boards- if you currently support FX 125w CPU's and your board has the black socket you may be OK for a little while with your board.

As an option to the Gigabyte board consider the ASUS M5A99X Evo or the M5A97. I have the 99X and it is a great board :toast: Reviews for both of them were done here at TPU (check the review section)*
*ASUS uses UEFI Bios and Gigabyte currently does not so that's other benefit of the ASUS boards

Both Gigabyte and ASUS boards mentioned have better power systems than an 880G so that is a benefit you should consider. Also, if you are not planning to go Crossfire or SLI, the 970 series boards will save you a few $$$.

1090t is faster then ANY Of the fx chips and newer chipsets almost never offer any real performance gains

Nothing 'offficial and finalized' has come from AMD regarding the new chipset(s) that may be coming out.
If you're planning on buying Piledriver, wait until its released before buying a new motherboard.

I say that because who knows, it's entirely possible that the 990 and 970 chipsets will only support cpus up to Piledriver and no further.

Not to change the topic, but where are the Phenom II 1100t's?? Not Available? Also I would go with the 990 and uefi bios for the future possible upgrades.

I would wait unless the new board has at least minimum 2 premium features over your current board that you desire.

you can find them if you search for them but they are very expensive at some places , they are no longer being made hence low/no stock

Thanks

Thanks a million to all for your help.

my board is an am3 white socket -- no am3+ .

Its also very clear that newer unreleased amd boards with newer chipsets will not support pcie 3.0.

Inceptor you are right but i doubt it... As newer versions of sandforce and ocz's released vertex4 ssds are already demanding revised sata 3. 2013 will be a year for only ssd's.
I still consider that mobo manufacturers have nothing much to offer considering the lowest of the lowest systems today with a more than decent graphics will have all games for lunch. AMD already had a hiccup with am3 and wont be ready to release a more "effective socket" for piledriver and steamroller (which is the end for the bulldozer generation).
There also exists the "multi-core" conundrum (few programs practically use many cores--correctly put -> unneeded) wherein Amd will solely have to improve their IPC and memory bandwidth to match up to intel in any way. With 8 new instructions for the bulldozer which are barely used ( taking a look at AES it still is a far way off when compared with the sandy- bridge). Whoops..............im launching off topic...

thanks norton for your recommendation for the asus board. Although i hate Asus (cheap marketing --cheap quality) im still open to it. Dont really care much for uefi as there is no performance benefit but rather an increase in cost. Plus im used and kinda like gigabyte's bios. Anyways this board is a major consideration(if i decide to buy). On a practical front Asus does support newer cpu's on older chipsets and sockets. Am checkin right now.............. seems interesting costs the same as gigabyte. Will consider it.

Lets see if the waits worth it ---- OR -----if i loose my patience id just buy ( before a good product disappears from the market)...........................

thanks guys.

Seriously hard to find now. Any Thuban over a 1055T is pretty much sold out or very difficult to find and/or has a price premium. Any that were produced up until the end of last year most likely ended up being packaged as 960Ts; my 960T unlocked, no problems, and judging from the evidence of stock clocks at x6 (through CCC --> cpu power), mine would have been a 1065T, and looks to be overclocking like an unlocked 1065T.
You'd have to bin 960Ts, but some people have found very good ones, equivalents to good 1100Ts.
