Over clocking question about its operation

When I look at CPU-Z, it show my processor speed clock at about 1500Mhz. When I turn on Prime 95, to test, then processor speed goes to 4090Mhz Is this how over clocking works, the over clocking doesn't kick in until it comes under load?

i5 2500k ----- GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P -------- 8 gig ram

yes and no ,


the thing that is changing your CPU frequency is Speedstep / C1E / Cool n Quiet (for amd). its to save power and in effect will lower your idle temps. when your CPU is not being used / Under load like you said then yes it will slow down.

the automatic overclocking of intel cpu's is Turbo Boost.
