Dear people,

Yesterday night there was a burning smell coming from my PC. Unfortunately it was too dark to get a good look so today I inspected my videocard and removed the cooler.
Seems like there's one small part that is burned, however my GTX 460 still works and I haven't discovered any malfunctions so far.

Still I would like to know what the part that's blown up exactly is and if it can do any harm to the rest of my GTX 460.

Could you guys take a look?

RMA that card. Doesn't matter if it works fine...it will probably die at some point. That should not happen.

well it is a Gigabyte card normal it's just there OC cards that got problems not getting enough voltage to be stabile, could it could also be that mudkips card have some freak components.

Just run Heaven @ 800x600, all settings maxed out, 20 min stable max temp 43.

I think the blown up capacitor regulates the fan, not sure because the fans are connected to a molex adapter.

That card has more than a damaged cap, it also looks like some cooked resistors. You likely have an over voltage someplace else on the card.

Edit: cooking a resistor changes its value even if it still conducts.

Where do you see a cooked resistor?

Where do you see a cooked resistor?

Look at the part numbers screened onto the PCB...typically(but not always), Rxxx= resistor, and Cxxx = capacitor.

Notice the "R" numbers point to "black" bits, and the "C" point to brown ceramic capacitors.

I would give them the reason of the thing is burned! I mean come on just because it still works doesn't mean that it is not fried! Just look at that thing. You are lucky it did not catch on fire!

Do yourself a favor and RMA it on the grounds that the card has burn marks on it due to failure!

To me it looks to a fet for one of the power phases.

EDIT:

Upon a second look, I think it's a surface mount capacitor.

Well, AFAIK you're not supposed remove the cooler because it can void your warranty. How can I proof burn marks?

Just send it to them. You have all the proof you need on the card! For goodness sake man they will take a look at the card and see it for themselves! Just RMA it trust us they will send you a new card to replace that fried out one, Maybe even apologize to you for this happening!

From the pictures it looks like a "C" identical to the one next to it and also the R301 is blown or missing, first photo.

Q217 doesn't look good either as it appears chared on one side, last photo.

I would not run it and risk other components burning up.

The pn# indicates it is a surface mount cap, but look next to it. You will see 2 other caps torched and 2 resistors that obviously took some heat. A change in capacitance and resistance is not going to lead to good things. Starting a fire is unlikely, but it could take out the power supply..... and power supply failure can take out everything else.

The burn part is actually a transistor (Q217) not capacitor (C138) -- check attached pic --
Then check here for electronic symbol designator -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_symbol --

Why it burnt, could be dust or anything that shorts one of the transistor pin to both capacitor pin next to it (opposite C138).
You dont have to do anything for that to happen, ie overclock, do mods, etc...
Its a disaster beyond your control.

IMO that transitor control the power phase, since there are more than 1 phase (is it 6? i dont remember) your card still work fine.
Over time, with 1 less power phase, the other power phase will run overloaded, especially when overclocking involved, and shorten their life.
Its just one of the possibilities, there are many other possibilities of what will happen over time.
Hey if you're feeling lucky, it could be part of fan controller, so it won't affect your card performance.

My point is, you may not see the effect now, but I strongly suggest you to RMA the card while its still under warranty.

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Its a resistor, and while it might be running good now, once that extra voltage running through whatever causes some electromigration you will start wondering why it is acting strange
