TOY MAKER TO THE WELL-HEELED Apple surprised just about everyone Wedneday by naming its latest Ipad, the third model in its line of shiny drinks trays, not 'Ipad 3' or 'Ipad HD' as had been widely anticipated, but just 'new Ipad'.

When asked about this by Miguel Helft of Forbes magazine, Apple's chief of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller responded with a throwaway line in reply.
I asked Phil Schiller why the name "new iPad" (and not iPad3, iPadHD). Answer: we don't like to be predictable.

Aside from the observations that this won't be the 'new Ipad' for long and won't be the last 'new Ipad' unless Apple stops developing and releasing newer models as time goes on - a prospect that is inconceivable for the device responsible for about half of the revenues of the most highly valued company in the world by market capitalisation - this is, to say the least and being polite about it, an unfortunate, even arrogant choice by Apple's top executives.

This will lead to lots of persistent confusion among the Apple faithful and detract from maintaining the Cupertino company's history of keeping its besotted fans who have more money than sense on the treadmill of upgrading to the latest Apple device every time it releases a new one.

It's arrogant because it shows that Apple doesn't care a bit whether or not it confuses its punters and the buying public at large. For Apple, its pride in its image as being too cool for its customers apparently is more important than communicating with them clearly and unambiguously. This naming of the third Apple tablet as just the 'new Ipad' exposes its arrogance.

Calling the new toy the same name as the old one is deceptive and moronic of Apple. It will cause lots of deliberate confusion over which version of the iPad people are talking about and dodgy sellers on eBay and elsewhere will offload the old model as the new model to the clueless.

Egan Orion made a good point when closing the article with this oberservation:

Steve Jobs would never have painted himself into this corner. He was much smarter than this.

ain't that a shame.
The only thing about Apple buyers being ripped off by dodgy sellers on eBay and elsewhere
for apple is that they themselves are not Ripping off and selling to the clueless.:nutkick::roll:

Not really... the error was in naming the iPad 2. Look at the iPod Touch or Nano for instance. They never named them 2, 3, HD, etc. but just the same basic name and the implied generation. There has never been a fuss about that, it seems to work. The thing with sub-titles or whatever you call them is that there's no nice ending point. One cannot simply have an Ultra iPad 3D HD Remix later on down the line.

Exactly, Did not Jobs do that?

OF all fud threads against apple.

The Ipad is the only product I can see still doing great and their is nothing negative about it. Just personal bias over andriod and iOS.

The Ipad is tech design at its best. People might say "there was pad tablets before apple" but they obviously did not have the features and simplicity as apples ipad.

Anyways I think the "New Ipad" is going to be truly great for what its going to achieve, and Ipads are the last topic to crap on from apple.
Should be crapping on apple for the walled garden environment, and silly iOS issues and setbacks from lack of features.

So is the next iphone going to be named "new iphone"

I can't wait for Nvidia to release "new GPU" and for ATI to counter it with the next generation of "new GPU".

I also ordered "new sandwich press" for my wife.

Should be crapping on apple for the walled garden environment, and silly iOS issues and setbacks from lack of features.

And their prices. They STILL use nearly equal prices no matter the currency for the most part.

One quick example: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
vs.
http://store.apple.com/de/product/MC573D/A
vs.
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573Z/A

29eur = 38usd
26gbp = 40.66usd

And they do this kinda sh*t on pretty much all of their stuff.. no matter if it's the OS or a device or accessory of some sort. As you can imagine, the price difference for something like an iPhone/Pad/Pod gets pretty ridiculous..

The point is the bad marketing scheme not the product. And the ass at apple for making a poorly thought out remark. It seems not all at apple have as polished an image as the product.

There will be unscrupulous sellers who will take advantage, especially over the internet where one can't see the product first hand. Bait and switch. To that end I have already seen confusion between ads claiming 3g speeds where the "new" ipad is 4g lte. So some distinction should be made by apple. Simple is better and I think ipad3 is the way to go.

Auto makers do a better job with model and year naming, so ipad3 would be a logical naming scheme or ipad2012 or ipadv3. "new" is dumb by all standards consumers have come to expect. "New" could just simply mean a new graphic on the box without reformulation. Basically I expect better from apple and this may point to a ship with no helmsman. I agree with the comment that Jobs would not have done this.

I agree with mailman here. Apology for what? You can use the same argument with anything. Toshiba Satellite Z830-10M or Toshiba Satellite Z830-11H? The name really don't say anything so you have to read up on it before you buy.

There will be unscrupulous sellers who will take advantage, especially over the internet where one can't see the product first hand. Bait and switch.

As it is with EVERYTHING, especially over the internet.

You actually think calling two different products the exact same name is clever, do you? Telling people to "look at the specs" is ridiculous. Or you're just trolling. Whatever.

Like with any product it is up to the consumer to put in minimal effort and do a little research into what they are spending money on. If you buy something based solely on advertising it's not very wise. Simple as that.

You actually think calling two different products the exact same name is clever, do you? Telling people to "look at the specs" is ridiculous. Or you're just trolling. Whatever.

Calling someone a troll for stating an opinion is trolling. Please be more respectful towards other members.

Schiller..."we don't like to be predictable"

I've seen current tv ads reporting the "new" ipad with 3G.

At first I thought it was a mistake or they played an old add.

Unpredictable = Scam.

If I can't be certain and confussion is the business model apple wants to project, then the people at apple to to redesign their sales pitch.

Who's on first base. What's on second. I don't know's on third.

Like with any product it is up to the consumer to put in minimal effort and do a little research into what they are spending money on. If you buy something based solely on advertising it's not very wise. Simple as that.

Calling someone a troll for stating an opinion is trolling. Please be more respectful towards other members.

Sure, but when someone obviously is, then it's reasonable to call him out on it - and I put it as a possibility, anyway. There's no way this is "just an opinion" on something so mind-numbingly obvious that two different products should have different names, even slightly. This is just Apple being an ass. It's also the tone in which MM says this which gives it away, frankly.

He's been called out on this by many people before on other threads, too and the comment has stood.

Its a fact some people see Apple in the news and you know instantly they shop at CyberCryBaby and Bitch. What I said isn't trolling. When I buy a Ford F-150 I don't assume its the latest one. I tend to look at what year. You know......read about something BEFORE I buy it.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I aint trolling. Just stating an opinion.
