the temperature on my 9600xt, when idle, is around 44C° and 60C°. When i start to play anything, the catalyst tells me that it's above a safe temperature and it's going to decrease the clock speed. Then I close the game to see the temp and its around 100C°!! I don't overclock, and when i see 100C° I turn my pc off and then touch the 9600xt. It's not really hot, my processor is hotter, and it is at 65C°. Help me please. I've tried to just close the catalyst and play but after about 10-15 minutes the screen goes blank but I can still hear the sounds of the game.

Hi Wickezel

I had a similar problem with my 3d connect 850 xt it idled at 45 but would rocket upto 95 + when gaming. So i will pass on the advice I was given. Use the ati tool to override your fan settings. Make the card go to 100 % once it gets over say 55 - 60 C but step it up over five stages. This now keeps my xt at 65 C with pe speeds full load. It may be a bit noisy but better that than a cooked card. Also look at reseating the coller with AS 5 and or replacing with an artic cooler. I will be replacing my cooler ay some point this week. Hope this helps. I am sure other people will similar or better advice but starting with will lower the temp.

The problem is definately that the cooler isn't making good contact with the core. It might be a factory fault if it's still the normal stock cooling and you haven't touched it. There's no way a 9600XT should be even close to that... I mean, c'mon... Up to 60°C at idle...

If you are using stock cooling - or any aftermarket cooler for that matter - re-apply the thermal paste and make sure there's good contact between the heatsink and core.

I tried downloading other software that would tell me the temperature. I got ati tray tools. There, when the 9600xt is idle, i get around 40C°, and when I play it goes up to around 55C°.It seems about right...
Maybe my catalyst has a problem? All of this started when i got catalyst 5.6... but now it doesn't matter if i install catalyst 5.4, it is still kinda crazy about temperature. Sometimes i check and its 20C°. Other times i check and it's 100C°. Sometimes i turn on the computer and its normal (40 idle, 55 playing).

Well how stable are games?
Maybe run ATITool's scan for artifacts for a few hours?

Problem solved

Somehow everything went back to normal, now it's 35-45C° idle and 45-55C° playing, every time. weird stuff...
thanks for all the help anyway.
